The Foundation series is a science fiction book series written by American author Isaac Asimov. First collected in 1951, for thirty years the series was a trilogy: Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation. It won the one-time Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966. Asimov began adding new volumes in 1981, with two sequels: Foundation's Edge and Foundation and Earth, and two prequels: Prelude to Foundation, Forward the Foundation.

Forward the Foundation is set during Hari Seldon's life, during the time that Psychohistory is being developed and the Foundations are being initiated. I consider Asimov's last novel to be a stellar (!) introduction to the trilogy. The author expertly injects some of the scientific concepts developed since the original Foundation trilogy while staying within the spirit of the grand universe he devised long before writing "Forward". This book offers an outstanding glimpse of how precarious it would be to start a universe-shaking science/technology in a decaying society, as well as an endearing personal portrait of the great Hari Seldon, including his "family" and close colleagues.

If you want the whole Asimov "universe" in story-time sequence, you might want to read the Robot series, the Empire series, and "Prelude to Foundation" before reading this book. Some of those books are of equal stature to "Forward". I consider "Prelude", the immediate predecessor of "Forward", to be of slightly less merit (four and a half stars), though it is well worth reading. I think one could also start the series with "Forward" without being bewildered by the omission of earlier books in the grand series.

Of course, if you want the digest version of the series, the original Foundation trilogy is an amazing work in itself. The trilogy predates word processing and the demand for "tomes", so it is quite concise, and the trilogy is eminently suitable for young readers or for those who want to test the waters before diving in.

If you're a SciFi skeptic, "Forward the Foundation" or the original Foundation trilogy would be great introductions to the field. If you're already a SciFi fan, these are seminal works: entertaining and well worth your time. Enjoy!

The Kindle version of "Forward" is excellent, and reasonably priced, as well.

Mysterious Wrench

"How would you describe the plot of this book?" is left with unintelligent options to answer the question, since most smart people don't find many books that aren't predictable. That said, the plot of the entire story is more an exploration of an idea. Something more to make you think than to simply be entertained. I have found very few stories that weren't predictable on some level. This book isn't predictable except that you know that everything will turn out alright because of the tone that the book has. At the same time it isn't full of surprises since the overall point of it is never really lost.

The pace would be faster if Asimov didn't rehash his rules and the history of certain things, but I kind of like it.

There are very few characters that get developed, for good reason, but those that do are very dynamic, clear and makes sense considering their place in the story.

This book is part of a very long and extremely good science fiction epic.

In the future, Hari Seldon became the character in Foundation series books who would appear (as a pre-recorded messenger) to advise leaders of their options.

Isn't this unique, as literary technique? An intellectual, developing from refugee to solitary theorist to leader of a tremendous organization? In time, Seldon becomes the advisor to Cleon I, Emperor of a decaying empire of human worlds. He faces Court officials, Generals, and other characters who complicate his life's work.
Since you have read other Foundation books, this ties together loose ends. Yugo Amaryl, Eto Demerzel, Dors Venabili and Wanda Seldon all contribute to that end.

one life

Be forewarned, this book, especially the latter half, is steeped in a sober melancholy that is not present in Asimov's earlier works. Whereas his earlier books mostly told stories from the perspective of a "rising" entity, this books is written strictly from the perspective of an Empire in decline. It tells a story of a great man struggling against his own mortality to shape a legacy. Even though we already know how it ends, be prepared for a emotionally rough ride through the latter half of Seldon's life, under the backdrop of a crumbling Empire beyond salvation, filled with loss and sorrow. It is clear that Asimov created Hari Seldon as his alter ego, and it is with the Trantorian Empire that Asimov attaches his greatest affection. Being an avid Foundation fan, I must say this book touched me deeper than other Asimov books ever did. I'm immensely grateful that Asimov chose the life of Seldon as his closing chapter in arguably the greatest science fiction series yet written, instead of some nonsensical mumbo jumbo about inter-galactic conflict with aliens, which was where the series was in danger of heading after the abysmal Foundation and Earth.
