The Claw was one of the last books that Lofts wrote, and seems to have been written, not for joy or pleasure but as a Project. To accomplish something. Those books often turn out badly. I have read several of Lofts' books, and almost all the others I've enjoyed more than this. Most of her historical novels fall into two general categories: biographical novels about queens, among them Anne Boleyn, Isabella of Castile, and Catherine of Aragon; and novels set in East Anglia centered around the fictitious town of Baildon (patterned largely on Bury St. Edmunds).

Like others of Lofts' books, there's more grit, truth, and reality than sweeping romance. I can't read enough Nora Lofts The Claw. Lofts creates great depth in her characters. As in real life, a person has strengths and weaknesses, -and all too often, the weaknesses take first place. I can't read enough Nora Lofts. Having first had the pleasure of finding her fictionalized biographies of English queens Kathryn of Aragon and Anne Boylen, I have since read many others of her books not strictly set in medieval times and they are equally satisfying. In a way, however, it was interesting just as a period piece- how differently rape cases were treated back then by the police, the newspapers, ect.....and not that long ago. But as a book, it really didn't add up to much.
Not her best, but certainly scary enough to read and reread later.
Lofts steps a little out of her comfort zone to attack an all to common phenomenon in Life, sexual assault on women. She more than rises to the occasion. Look out for the ride of your life.
Norah Lofts takes us to a very dark place with this one......suspense writing at it's very best. A small British village besieged by a monster, the suggestion of the paranormal, and the mounting savagery all combine to deliver a whale of a good tale...
