Henry VI part I: Key facts. Modern scholarship leans to the view that the plays which the Folio calls the second and third parts of Henry the Sixth were originally a two-part "Wars of the Roses" drama (The First Part of the Contention and The True Tragedy of Richard Duke of York) and that this play was a (collaborative) "prequel," written later to cash in on their success.

Only 10 left in stock (more on the way). Often referred to as the Bard of Avon, Shakespeare's vast body of work includes comedic, tragic, and historical plays; poems; and 154 sonnets.

The version of Henry VI and the corresponding footnotes that appear in this volume were originally published in William . Introduction to the Three Parts of Henry VI. After Agincourt.

Displaying the bold vision and growing skill of a young playwright, these are Shakespeare’s first three history plays, covering some sixty tumultuous years of English history. Their pageantry, violence, and stirring speeches excite audiences with action as well as character, and midway through the final play in this trilogy, a shocking, clever, inimitably evil new voice is heard-that of Richard of Gloucester, destined to become England’s most fearsome and hated ruler of all time, Richard III. The three plays of the Henry VI cycle are among Shakespeare's first, and he probably wasn't the only author. I am a huge Shakespeare fan and am currently working my way through all his works. I have read a decent chunk of his plays already, but recently bought a complete collection.

Re all of the above:
Yeah, Shakespeare is a pretty good writer.
Some violence is a natural when you're dealing with the War of the Roses.
And, sure, there's sexual content, you know how those English nobles were; couldn't keep their hands to themselves.
The story isn't actually narrated. These are three plays full of dialogue.

I don't understand why more people don't read Shakespeare's history plays because they are some of his best work, especially the Henry VI trilogy. Shakespeare's interpretation and manipulation of history drive this trilogy forward and create unique opportunities to judge his skill against the "facts." I loved this trilogy! Not only is it an expert study in human nature (which is Shakespeare's trademark), it is action-packed with never a boring moment. Read it!
