Seamus Heaney reworks Sophocles' struggle between principle and pragmatism to great effect in The Burial at Thebes, says Neil Corcoran. In his book Antigones George Steiner showed how Sophocles' play is one of the most enduring texts in the history of western literary, philosophical and political consciousness. The play tells how Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, gives her brother, the traitor Polyneices, a form of ritual burial (she scatters his corpse with dust) against the explicit instructions of her uncle, King Creon, and the advice of her sister, Ismene, even though she knows that the consequence will be her death.

Epic revival of Seamus Heaney’s Sophocles adaptation. Roy Alexander Weise is one of the most in-demand young directors out there, and has an exceptionally busy 2020 lined up. He makes his Lyric Hammersmith bow with a revival for Seamus Heaney’s epic take on Sophocles’ ‘Antigone’, about a young woman who risks everything to bury her brother, in defiance of the king. The production will feature a chorus drawn from the Lyric’s young company. Posted: Friday May 31 2019.

When Creon, king of Thebes, grants burial of one but not the "treacherous" other, Antigone . Nothing I can offer could improve on the marriage of Seamus Heaney and Sophocles.

This version of the play The burial at Thebes, first performed at The Abby Theater April 5, 2004 is one of the cleanest strait forward, easiest to get involved in versions. Commissioned to mark the centenary of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 2004, The Burial at Thebes is Seamus Heaney's new verse translation of Sophocles' great tragedy, Antigone - whose eponymous heroine is one of the most sharply individualized and compelling figures in Western drama. Faithful to the play's time and place, The Burial at Thebes represents opposing voices as they enact the ancient conflict between family and state in a time of crisis, pitching the morality of private allegiance against that of public service.

Above all, The Burial at Thebes honours the sovereign urgency and grandeur of the Antigone, in which language speaks truth to power, then and now.

Comes in good condition, good book, but the sticker on the cover was annoying to take off and left a sticky residue on the book.

Everything by Heaney is worth savoring - this clash between traditional respect for the dead and insistence on the degradation of an enemy echoes through Greek literature and today's news.
