Born of Greek heritage, Paula Renee Burzawa spent ten summers visiting the ancient village of Vassara, Greece before turning twenty-one. Traveling to her ancestral land has been the basis of her writing and documenting unique insights into her mother’s and grandmother’s homeland.

When a shy American teenager travels with her mother to the mountain village of Vassara, Greece, after the unexpected death of a family member, she is overcome with grief. As she watches children chase balls across the town square and old widows ride atop donkeys to harvest fields of almond and olive trees, the young girl realizes she has stumbled upon a gateway to a new life.

What starts out as a holiday abroad quickly turns into the discovery of a magical place, where love and friendship endure through time and where traditions of an ancient world survive modern change to bring about an inexplicable miracle. Summer after summer, she cannot resist returning to her mother's homeland and the enchanting village that enraptures both her heart and soul. godlike

After reading Tasso's Journey, this book wasn't at all what I expected. At first I wasn't sure whether I would get into a "coming of age" memoir kind of book, but it turns out this is a really great book. Kind of a "Under the Tuscan Sun" meets "Definitely Maybe" but set in Greece - I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, and I didn't want it to end. It brought back to life a lot of feelings I had on some life-changing trips to Italy when I fell in love with that country. I guarantee, if you read this book you will want to visit the towns of Vassara, and Sparta, and Magoula. The book is very well written, and the author really has a knack for describing scenery and emotions. A great summer read (or a great winter read if you're missing summer)!

I liked the simple telling of a young girls experience's into womanhood as she travels to her ancestral home in Greece. Simple but interesting. Held my interest through the entire book.

I really enjoyed reading this coming-of-age story of a teen who learns a lot about life and herself. Since I've not been to Greece, this was a great way to learn about the Greek way of life! I especially enjoyed the description of the Greek village and the way the author brought it and the characters to life. It's appropriate for all age levels and is a must read for every teen (and their parents).

A very good friend gave me this book to read over the Thanksgiving holiday and I couldn't put it down and read it cover to cover. A beautiful story of a young girl's discovery of her ancestry and nature's beauty. Her mother takes her to to her relative's small mountainside town in Greece for several consecutive summers as a teenager and there she discovers as much about herself as the world beyond her suburban Chicago. The author writes with ease and without exaggeration as well as with both a sense of humor and a poetic beauty that was lovely and fun to read. Highly recommended for women of all ages to enjoy reading during a weekend at the beach or to pack in your suitcase for a good read on your next vacation.

This book has it all. It is a great coming of age tale of a young girl learning about life in a foreign country. She discovers love, her faith and heritage.
Fabulous depiction of the Greek countryside. This would make a great movie!!!
