A new school, a new assignment for Buffy the vampire slayer. In this gene ration, she is Buffy Summers, a new student at Sunnydale High. And it wasn't until the end of the second year that I started watching it regularly. NEW SCHOOL.

SAME ASSIGNMENT.

Something's wrong in Sunnydale, California...something more than the usual bad hair day. As long as there have been vampires, there has been the Slayer. One girl in all the world to find them where they gather and stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers. In this generation, she is Buffy Summers, 16 years old and a new student at Sunnydale High. Her experiences at her last school persuaded Buffy to try to resume the life of a normal teenager. But it is no coincidence that Buffy has come to this town at this time. The area is a center of mystical energy, and all the signs point to an iminent, crucial upheaval. Once in a century comes The Harvest: a night when the Master Vampire can draw enough power to break free and open the portal between his world and ours...unleashing havoc. With the help of new friends and a new Watcher, Buffy's back in business....

This was a VERY dry retelling of two episodes. The writer didn't even try to offer any further insight into the hearts and minds of the beloved characters, which a reader usually hopes to gain by reading a novel version. You could save your money and read the transcript for free online instead because it is basically the same.

I am a latecomer to the Buffy mythos. The show had already been on TV for a year when I finally rented the videotape. And it wasn't until the end of the second year that I started watching it regularly. As a result, there is a huge gap in my knowledge of Buffy lore, which can only be made up by studying the ancient tomes. "The Harvest" has eluded me for some time.
One of the problems with being a middle-aged Buffy fan is that your friends look at you strangely when you mention it. Not only did I have no idea how Buffy got to Sunnydale, how she met the rest of the Scooby gang, etc., I had no one to ask about it. "The Harvest" is a fun, easily read book that covers the first episode perfectly. For me, it brought a lot of the puzzle pieces together. It lacks much of the pain and anguish of the Buffy of the later years and so is quite a bit of plain good fun. Buffy's quips at vampires seem quippier and Xander's antics still have their charm. Willow's honesty is winning, and Cordelia is, well, Cordelia is Cordelia. Giles doesn't get as much play as he should, but that may be a bit more characterization than it's fair to expect from an 146 page retelling of a TV episode.
As a matter of fact, it's amazing just how fresh this book is, even after countless Buffy books and episodes. We get to follow Buffy as she makes new friends and discovers that she didn't quite manage to leave Slaying behind. Right of the bat (bad pun) she is embroiled in the battle with the master that spills over into many episodes. This is necessary reading for beginning Buffyites. Be prepared for entertainment, suspense and a whopping good finish.

Welcome to Buffy's world. It's been a long time since I've seen the pilot episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This book is identical to that episode. Here we meet Buffy, Xander, Willow, Cordila, and Giles. This was a great TV series and a great book. However, I've now read it 2 times and I can safely say I'll never read it again. If you've not seen the show or you have an have a desire, such as I, to read the books this is a must have.

After being kicked out of her previous school (for burning down the school gym that happened to be filled with vampires) Buffy is the newest matriculating student at Sunnydale High School. On her first day she meets a few characters that will become essential in her fight against all that is evil: Xander, Willow, Giles, and even Cordelia. Sound familiar.... well it should. The Harvest is literally verbatim of the show. Is this bad? I don't think so. Being a life-long obsessed fan of the show it was fantastic revisiting the beginning.

Buffy was hoping that a new school meant no vampires, but of course what would a Vampire Slayer be without the Vampires. On her first day of school a body is discovered in the girls' locker room, a body that has two particular puncture wounds on its neck.... Hmmm I wonder... Buffy quickly learns that her duties as the Vampire Slayer are not over. Then bring in Angel, the handsome mysterious 'friend' that warns Buffy about the Master's evil plans: The Harvest - his attempt to come back into the world after being stuck underground inside a mystical bubble-thingy.

Again, after being a huge fan of this show for so very long (boy do I feel old) I am reveling in re-reading all the books. While the humor and one liners are timeless I grew up looking up to Buffy, somehow handling everything that is thrown her way and maintaining true friendships all the while being human (even struggling with being grounded like normal teens). In such a series, character development is built through every installment and through each fight the Scooby Gang fights. While Buffy is clearly the star of the series, each character shines in their own right - even Cordelia. This is one of those series that without literally every character (even the baddies) the books would not be as amazing as they are. If you are a fan of this show you won't be disappointed in the first installment of the book series. A must read for any die-hard fan!
