Ancient Hawaiian beliefs state that any mortal looking upon or being seen in defiance toward the marchers will die violently. Haunted Hawaiian Nights, by Lopaka Kapanui. Some people maintain that if the mortal lies motionless, face down on the ground, they are showing proper respect, fear and deference to the nightmarchers, and they will be spared. Additionally, mortals can avoid harm or death from nightmarchers by being fortunate to have an ancient ancestor marcher present to recognize them. Lopaka Kapanui (2005).

Haunted Hawaiian Nights. This book captures a part of Hawaiian life rarely advertised or seen. These tales of Hawai'i were told to the author over many years by everyday people.

Storyteller Lopaka Kapanui, an apprentice of the late Glen Grant, continues his legacy with this collection of talesboth ancient and modernwhich capture a part of Hawaiian life rarely advertised or seen. All of these tales are part of Hawaiis folklore, and all of them were told to the author over many years by everyday people. They are unembellished, and all the more powerful because of that. They teach us that there is much in life that cannot be explained, and that in a modern world that prizes the rational there are others above and below its surface. A born storyteller, Kapanui gives the reader a rich voyage through other times and places, keeping in sight all the while the human comedy and its corresponding tragedy, along with the unseen humor and terror that surround every one of us.

Bought this for my NC aunt after a trip to HI. She said she couldn't put this book down and the stories were very interesting. Opened up her eyes to the Hawaiian spirit culture and found some parts humorous and light-hearted.

I love hawaiian ghost stories! They are so unique! I'm surprised that, as far as I know, none of the 'ghost hunting' shows on TV have been there to investigate. I guess they are tooooo scared!!
