Forty-four-year-old Cape Cod clam bar owner Mary Hopkins is stuck in the cycle of her seasonal business; overwhelmed by the relentless influx of new names and fresh young faces, she feels as if life is passing her by. In the first days of the summer season, a young waitress’s tragic accident stirs up unresolved pain from Mary’s past, leaving her longing for connection. At the same time, Mary’s life is further upended as she begins to suspect her beloved great-aunt, the one person in the world who loves her unconditionally, is descending into Alzheimer’s disease. Then, in walks Dan, a lost love—perhaps the greatest of her life— returning to the Cape after disappearing years before without an explanation. As Mary faces these challenges and losses, it’s her rekindled romance with Dan and her burgeoning unlikely friendships with a warm, eccentric collection of local characters that keep her afloat. Set against the backdrop of Cape Cod sand, sun, and seafood, Summer Shift is the story of a woman’s struggle to find the peace, love, and human connection that have eluded her for decades.

This is a great book for summer reading, and it doesn't have to be a beach book. It's just as enjoyable at home. Even though Clambake restaurant owner Mary Hopkins finds her summer filled with tragedy and sadness, it doesn't mean that there aren't some good times left. Mary is still angry and guilty over her husband's death 10 years ago in a car accident in which alcohol played a part, and shortly after the restaurant opens this season, one of her waitresses is killed in a similar car accident, leaving behind an 18-month-old baby. While all of this is happening, Mary's only living relative, Aunt Lovey, is not quite herself. Mary is overwhelmed.

How all of this plays out with relationships, grieving and finding happiness again is done very well with a lot of hard work, strength, humor, and letting go. However, just when one problem seems to be solved, another one crops up.

I loved this book, and read it all in one sitting. The author obviously knows the area quite well, which makes it even better. Recommended.

There were some very positive aspects to this book but it was slow moving and predictable. The picture on the back - mentioned by another reviewer, is great. The setting is the strongest aspect of this book. It evokes Cape Cod as well as a restaurant kitchen. The characters from the restaurant could be in any kitchen anywhere so if you've done restaurant work its fun. I enjoyed this story but its hard to recommend spending money on.

I enjoyed the book. Nice portrayal of the challenges a woman faces in a beautiful setting. I fell in love with the Cape.

Enjoyed Lynn's first book but I wanted this one to go on forever! The eccentric, quirky Cape Cod lifers - the fun and funny restaurant staff - Mary's naivete...delicious! What a great book for a Lifetime movie AND a second "chapter" for next summer! I'll be waiting.....

The shipping was well within the time expected. I wish I could review the book itself. Haven't had time to sit and enjoy a good book, but, I have to say the condition is good and it is sitting out waiting for me to enjoy it.

I enjoyed this book, it was thoughtful and well written. I am looking forward to reading another one of her books.
This book was a disappointment. A very slow read (read at night to go to sleep). The ending is predictable. There were opportunities throughout the book for the other characters (other than Mary) to have a role but that never happened. So for those of you who don't want to pay the extra charge of the download to Kindle, don't waste your money.
