This book, Crossfire Trail, by Louis L'amour is a Five Star western novel. It starts in the bottom of a damp dark hull of a ship, Rafe Caradec is trapped and has plan to spring loose. While he is in this hull he meets an old, feeble, dying man named Charles Rodney. Charles has a big spread of land out west in the Americas, Charles wants nothing more in life than to have his daughter and granddaughter to take over this ranch and live a carefree life.
I came to appreciate why Louis L'Amour can write so well- he has experience as a seaman (important to the start of the book), a boxer, a cowboy and an observant lover of Nature. Great story, great read.
