The unforgettable Margaret of Ashbury returns in the second book of the trilogy that began with A Vision of Light.Margaret, a resourceful midwife, is living with the insufferable relatives of her third husband, Gilbert de Vilers, known as Gregory. She is carving out a life for herself and her daughters despite the hostility and greed of her in-laws. But when Gregory is captured in France and held for ransom, Margaret knows she must take action—her in-laws are too tight with money to be of any use—so she teams up with her old friends Mother Hilde, the herbalist, and Brother Malachi, an alchemist on a quest for the secret of changing base metals into gold. Together, the trio plan to rescue Gregory and bring him back to London, where he and Margaret can start a new life away from his meddling family. And thus begins a wild romp across fourteenth-century Europe. Murderous noblemen, scheming ladies, truculent ghosts, and a steady stream of challenges plague the journey. Margaret will need not only her special gift of healing, her quick mind, and her independent spirit but the loyalty of her friends and the love of her new husband to carry them all safely home.

The second of the Margaret of Ashbury trilogy finds Margaret trying to pry her husband Gregory out of the fingers of the dishonorable nobleman who has taken him prisoner for ransom. With the help of our old friends Brother Malachi and Mother Hilde, she pits her wits against the nobleman who has no intention of releasing him.

All the humor and love of Margaret that endeared her to us in the first book are present, along with the ghosts and spirits that help guide Margaret to her goal.

Giving this one 3.5 stars as it got very complex and odd about halfway through it. I so wanted to "love" Margaret but her "light" did not shine enough in this one for that to happen.
What I did like was her visions and much of the first part of the book. It was great how the author delved into the past to explain certain aspects of Margaret's prior life.

I was not really thrilled at all about the trip outside of England and back. Malachi left a lot to be desired as a character but Margaret, Gregory and the ghosts were quite entertaining. I may try the first novel and see how that works for me.

I can find no place to contact Amazon... In addition to the book - which I received - i paid for a Kindle book too. I only can open a sample of it ...The information says I must purchase the book ..which I have done. Thanks for any help .. there's no way for me to question Amazon.

I totally enjoyed this book! I love historical fiction, fantasy, and adventure, and this book satisfies all of those favorites. The book is well-written, well-edited and extremely entertaining. The author has obviously done extensive research of this time period and the book was packed with information about the daily life of the people of several different social strata. I have already bought the second book and hope there will be more to come!

This one is no 2 and takes up right where the first novel left off. Riley seems to have the happy facility for combining the true state of women in the middle ages with a modern sensibility. Her heroine always manages to get around the male dominated society in which she lives and I found some of the characters done with such a sly tongue in cheek that I laughed out loud!

I enjoyed learning of the further adventures of Margaret of Ashbury. Some of the situations seemed sort of far-fetched, but they fit in with the story. I'm guessing that in medieval times folks had different explanations for some of the things that happened than we would have today. I always enjoy realing about the middle ages.

This book was another of the Margaret of Ashbury novels. Ms. Riley is definitely one of my favorite historical novelists. When I first learned that she was a professor of political science, I must admit I thought "uh oh, this will be boring"! Boy, was I mistaken! I absolutely fell in love within the first page of this wonderfully written novel. Ms. Riley's characters come so alive you feel as though you know them, and her wit is amazingly entertaining. I have read all the Margaret Ashbury novels, and all the rest of Ms. Riley's published books. I heartily recommend any book written by this woman!
I read these three books one right after the other, as I enjoyed each so much I couldn't wait for more. That said, I thought each story had a real ending, (I hate series that are just one book that you get charged for by the chapter.)

This time around there are two major quests. The search for Margaret's husband, who has been taken as a prisoner of war by an evil person and is not being ransomed due to a personal grudge is one, the other is the search for the "Green Lion", a secret of transmutation. There are two alchemists, Margaret's friend is one, but the other is in the employ of the evil lord who has Geoffrey in his dungeon.

It's is a great story.
