Dark River Road kept me feeling overwhelmed with emotions for over 50% of the story. Sometimes I was so angry I wanted to reach into the pages and smack the living crap out of a few of the characters.

It seems Virginia Brown left her comfort zone of writing many very successful romance novels when she wrote Dark River Road which is Southern Gothic drama at it’s best. What a great job she did with this touching novel and I enjoyed it immensely. The odds are against 12 year old Chantry as he tries to protect his mother while battling his horrifying stepfather, Rainey. Rainey is a drunk who always has a preposterous scheme to make money.

This story left me crying more than once. I do tend to be a bit of a softy, but usually it is reserved for animals or tragedies. Dark River Road kept me feeling overwhelmed with emotions for over 50% of the story. Sometimes I was so angry I wanted to reach into the pages and smack the living crap out of a few of the characters. Other times I wanted to give them a warm hug.
There is a bit of mystery, which is what made me get the book in the first place. But I got a lot more than I bargained for while the other parts of the story unfolded & drew me in and left me caring more about the people and how they were managing to survive. My visual imagination took completely over as the author did an incredible job of describing things without drowning me in so much detail I had no room to "see" things for myself.
The underlying dark story is about bigotry & its' ugly affect on those it holds in the grip of prejudice & hate & fear. But there is also the light of family ties, love & forgiveness, the genteel manners which hide the steely strength of Southern women who learn manipulation from early days in the cradle and know what they want and just how to get it.
Ms. Brown does a masterful job of presenting a story that uncovers the less than wonderful underbelly of small town charms when rumors are treated like facts and the wrong people have too much power.

Having not read anything previously by this author I did not know what to expect. To my delight this was one of the best novels I have read lately.

A well written and compelling coming of age story that takes place in a small town in Mississippi "Dark River Road" contains all the elements needed for a good novel. Interesting characters who are believable and well developed, location descriptions that bring you into the scene's with ease and a plot that is fully rounded and well thought out.

Chantry, the main protagonist, is a young man whose family is on the cusp of collapse. His mother and step-fathers relationship is complex, confusing and bears no semblance to the ideal's Chantry has come to believe in. His best friend is imploding emotionally while his younger brother's illness brings him close to death. If that were not enough to send any young teenager into unrequited angst, he must deal with bullying and a class structure that is unbreakable. How Chantry deals with coming of age is unique, heartwarming and sadly heartbreaking.

As Chantry comes to understand, power, wealth and social standing can be used to cover many failings. No more so than in a small town where the most powerful can control the government, law enforcement and the very jobs people need to survive. How do you fight someone who holds the key to the economic security of an entire town? As Chantry takes on the system that provides for him, he learns lessons that no 14 year old boy should.

The story is told in two distinct voices. Chantry as a boy growing into his teen years and Chantry as a man just passed 30 who comes back to the town to find the answers which eluded him as a teenager.

Right from the start, Virginia Brown had me hooked into the trials and travails of the young life of Chandry Callahan as he returns to his childhood hometown, filled with more nightmares and questions then he has answers. Having grown up in the "Sugar Ditch"' in MS, a poor part of town with his beautiful, intelligent mother, severely crippled little brother, and a step-father who had no love loss for him and Old man Quinton, seeming to relish in Chandry's brushes with the law, Chandry returns for answers to questions that have plagued him. When his mother dies in somewhat discernible circumstances, followed shortly by his stepfather's useless death, Chandry flees with his brother and dog to seek safety in a most unlikely place. What did this town and Old man Quinton have on his mother that kept her in this awful life, married to a man with such hate and loathing? Will Chandry find the answers he needs to put his life in order? Will old-man Quinton's grand-daughter see him, still as a low-life or the man he has become? An absolute must read. My heart lay open through the turn of every page. I didn't want it to end.

I gave it a 5 star because of the story. I don't have a problem with the way she brought every thing together, but it runs off in the middle of an intense dialogue between the characters. Such as when you are going to find out an important part of the next piece of your plot while the are talking on the veranda it says something like," the grass was rich and fragrant this time of year when it's hot after a fresh rain. ....and the scenery starts to be described in detail. your just made crazy, skipping all the fluff, maybe for a page your looking for the next sentence that is being said about the plot. I started skipping pages to keep the plotting moving. Way to much scenery going on & on while conversations between the characters are being revealed.
Ok so I've said enough about that....let it go.
it does move along bringing together very good twists and turns, then when you get close to the end of one crazy situation, another one starts. it's funny and sad.
Yes you will cry and cry hard too. I did love the book.
Yes I think you should read it.
