Review. Our hero Sean Courtney comes out of the wilderness with his achieveous Zulu Mbejane, right into the Boer war.
The Boer had developed tactical guerrilla warfare, with help of Kruger and others from The Zulu war and got Mouser rifles from the sympathetic Germans. Sean describes well the arrogance of the Victorian aristocratic army of Gen. Buller VC. Fighting by War Office manual and with mostly unfit soldiers and the bloodbath is in accordance on the British side.
Our hero becomes an officer and in the conversation with Gen. Acheson Sean suggest new tactics and erection of concentration camps for the Boer families. By doing this Sean takes the blame from the Queens officers for the atrocity. The New tactic came with the new arrivals from Afghanistan and Sudan. (Best described by Sir Winston in his book “ The River War “)
After armistice our hero takes part in the political aftermath and sides with Boers. This benefited the Empire much in WW1
It should be noted that greed for gold propelled the British to start the second Boer war and the Boers sued for armistice, as otherwise their families would have been exterminated in the concentration camps. Not mention this costs a star.
The year is 1899. The British Empire and the Dutch colonists battle furiously with guns, spears and swords. Sean Courtney's loyalties are tested ten fold. In the lush wild world of Africa, duty and betrayal undulate and unfold. One will discover intrigue, revenge, cruelty, and swift retaliating action. Wilbur Smith's writing talent leaves the enthralled reader riveted, always wanting more. Excellent.
Where do you find time to read today? Me? I'm a mass transit commuter with time to knock out a few chapters to and from work. Amidist the bumping from the crowds and halting stops I like to lose myself in a good book, so if a book doesn't have the power to grab and hold me, I put it aside (or toss the freaking thing)for another one that will.
THE SOUND OF THUNDER is a book that grabs your interest out of the proverbial starting gate. Wilbur Smith jumps right into the Boer War and doesn't let up. TRhis is another of his Courtney series, this time with Sean Courtney taking the reins and steering the action. Like most of his books there is remarkable history here, action and adventure, and the personal drama that's involved, with love lost and found, family struggles, and enough that kept me hoping for a longer commute.
It's an Action/Adventure novel of the best kind.
Oh, how I loved this book. But you really should read "When the Lion Feeds" first. This is the second in a series. I have recently discovered Wilbur Smith when a friend gave me "Monsoon". Since reading "Monsoon" I can't get enough of Mr. Smith's books. I never dreamed that books about Africa would enthrall me so much, but the characters are so well developed, plots full of adventure, romance, intrigue and treachery. What's not to love? I don't want to give any of the story away, but Sean Courtney is such a likable main character that's impossible to get too much. Even though he's marvelous, Mr. smith makes him very human, with shortcomings as well as virtues. And as a plus I am learning so much about the history of Africa, its trials and tribulations. For a really good read, lose yourself in a Wilber Smith book...you won't regret it!
Wilbur Smith is one of my favorite authors because he paints a detailed picture in your mind about the characters and the story, unlike any other. For 2 years I was addicted to him and read about 15 of his books. I am disappointed in his newer books because they aren't as descriptive, and I'm not interested in stories about the past 75 years.
I have read and now am re reading all of the Courtney saga books. They are to me a history of the 1800 s in Africa. Wilbur Smith is an excellent author. Well done.
Fantastic book with a lot of good and valuable detail. It rocks and the story line is powerful and full of tense moments plus pathos. The characters are well developed and real. Some of the areas described I been to and they appear to be representative of what you might experience if you traveled the same area in the same manner. Great read and I already look forward to the next chapters in the family saga.
I loved the history intertwined with the story. I loved the human reality which formed part of the descriptions of battle scenes. It is nice to see the way in which the author keeps people in the battle scenes still mindful of reality after the war.
I am not to keen on the far-fetched bits, but realise it is a novel and these sections for part of most novels.
Overall I enjoyed the read and am keen to read more books from the series. I liked the way in which the author describes his resilient characters.
