In fact, Ross Nichols, along with all the romantics that Ellis tries to shoot down, aren't saying much different from what Ellis speculates. Ellis uses the Romantics' fantasies to help shed light on who the Druid's may have been.

If you have any interest in little known Irish history, you will find this book interesting and fascinating. The story follows the exploits of two fictional brothers in the aftermath of the American Civil War as the Fenian Brotherhood tries to use the experience gained by the many Irishmen who fought in the war, both union and confederate fighters, to strike a blow against England's rule, whether it be in Ireland or the closer country of Canada. What makes the book interesting, from my perspective, is the historical background of the story and the actual historical figures making up the backdrop of the story.

I am a Scottish American raised along the Niagara River (NY) where much of the action in this novel takes place. I have been to all the forts on both sides of the river many, many times with a family of history buffs, and never have I heard one words or seen one historical marker about people of Irish extraction doing anything admirable there!
"The winners write the history books" has never been clearer to me than as I was reading this outstanding story based on true (I assume) incidents about Irish units raised during the War of 1812 period.
I am confident enough about the contribution of Scottish immigrants to American culture to enjoy reading about the efforts of people from Ireland, or any other country. I found the Ellis book in our public library, but learned that it was out of print and hard to find. I wanted all of my family to read this book.and gave it as a Christmas gift to be passed around our family.
I don't know how to recommend reissuing a novel. but it should be available to those investigating their Irish background. And to Scots and Brits who may have downplayed the Irish contribtion!
