Christian Johann Heinrich Heine (German: ; 13 December 1797 – 17 February 1856) was a German poet, writer and literary critic. He is best known outside Germany for his early lyric poetry, which was set to music in the form of lieder (art songs) by composers such as Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. Heinrich Heine, German poet whose international literary reputation and influence were established by the Buch der Lieder (1827; The Book of Songs), frequently set to music, though the more sombre poems of his last years are also highly regarded. His father was a handsome and kindly but somewhat ineffectual merchant; his mother was fairly well educated for her time and sharply ambitious for her son. Much of Heine’s early life, however, was influenced by the financial power of his uncle Salomon Heine, a millionaire Hamburg banker who endeavoured to trade generosity for obedience and with whom Heine remained on an awkward and shifting footing for many years.
Putting children to bed with song or story is a practice as old as parenting itself, but the nineteenth century obsessively analyzed and sought to structure that quotidian transaction – from Grimm's Hausmärchen to Proust's bedtime vigils, from Heinrich von Ofterdingen's dreams to Freud's Wolf-Man. In the oedipal age, the question of how lessons, stories, Geist moved from generation to generation felicitously, and what might disrupt their movement, became the source of immense anxiety. The ballad form was an important technology of transmission.

Düsseldorf, of a Jewish family. One of the greatest of German lyric poets, he had a varied career. After failing in business he tried law but found it uncongenial and finally turned to history and literature. His first published poems and plays established him as a young romantic. Other collections of poems are Neue Gedichte (1847), Romanzero (1851), and Letzte Gedichte (1853). Schumann composed music for Heine's poems, as did Schubert, Mendelssohn, Liszt, and many others.
