Works cannot effectively describe this book well enough. The inclusion of so many diverse literature works is completely useful for a historical American Literature class. Most importantly, it doesn't provide you with every detail of the work or author, but does provide you with nouns and verbs to know what to search and weed out some of the less useful searches. Thank you!

The book came in awful condition. Front cover appeared to be sliced by a sharp object, water damage was much worse than expected, stickies and other loose-leaf papers were left in the book as well. Spine is completely whack. First 10 pages are so crumpled and damaged by water that they don’t even fold correctly anymore. Nearly all corners have curled over. Does not look acceptable to me!

I rented this book, It was in horrible condition from the start. I am scared that because it is so damaged that they will make me buy this rental. THey have done it before allowing whatever damage that was there before be pinned on me. I hope they don't try this again. Just noting that I just got this book and it looks The cover is barely holding on so I have to be careful with it. I am not pleased, but I can't send it back because I have a lot of work to do for my class.

The book came in terrible condition! It looks like it has been used by over 100 people and has been dropped on the floor a couple of times. On the side of the book is what looks like a red Kool aid stain. Has marks all throughout the book. It’s still readable I guess.

This was not used much in class, but it still gave some wonderful reading. Buying these types of books means I won't have to buy individual books. I have many hours of reading in one.

Really big book with really thin pages! I wish I had time in my life to read it cover to cover - it's a great compendium of pieces.

This book has a pretty good selection of literature. It is a great way for students or the general reader to gain a solid introduction to American literature. It also has footnotes and sections which help the reader understand the context in which the literature was developed (e.g. significant historical and cultural developments which likely influenced the author of a given selection). If you're a totally literature geek, this book probably isn't your thing as it often only contains excerpts on the longer pieces, but for the rest of us who just want to get a feel for the subject, it is great.
This book was an excellent substitution for the 12th edition of the same title. The class I was in "required" 12th edition and I bought this one by mistake--no mistake! I saved money and it didn't effect my ability to complete the class. The subtle differences between the two editions isn't worth the price difference.
