However, the books of theory tend to be both abstruse and remote from literary appreciation, while books of practical criticism rarely spell out the principles which underpin them. Originally published in 1982, this book attempts to bridge the gap between the theory and practice of criticism.

The Historian's Craft (French: Apologie pour l'histoire ou Métier d'historien) is a 1949 book by Marc Bloch and first published in English in 1953 (New York: Knopf) (it was the first of his works to be translated into English). At that stage he was not as well known in the English-speaking world as he was to be in the 1960s where his works on feudal society and rural history were published. The book was written in 1941 and 1942. Bloch joined the French Resistance prior to its completion.

Brian Lee's suitably affectionate memories of academic and writer Allan Rodway (Other lives, 3 July) caught his personality beautifully.

Secondly, the book moves from very general background studies to detailed discussion of individual poets and poems. Part II, the main body of the book, contains analyses of the work of the most notable romantic poets writing before the French Revolution, and those - subject to greater pressures - who wrote, and wrote better, during and after it. The predicament of these later writers is profitably, if crudely, conceivable as a conflict between material realities and spiritual ideals. Over 14 million journal, magazine, and newspaper articles.

Students of literature are not sure of expositions of critical principle or examples of critical practice. However, the books of theory tend to be both abstruse and remote from literary appreciation, while books of practical criticism rarely spell out the principles which underpin them. Originally published in 1982, this book attempts to bridge the gap between the theory and practice of criticism. The bulk of the book consists of practical critiques of poems of various kinds from various periods that illustrate a variety of critical methods. The author does not simply try to match each poem with one method, but rather to show how a whole range of distinguishable methods are applicable to most poems, though in very different degrees. This is a clear and stimulating textbook, aimed at educating the literary sensibility. After studying this book, the reader should be able to approach the assessment of any work of creative literature with greater confidence and competence.
