Eduard Fraenkel is universally recognized as one of the greatest Classicists of the twentieth century. When you read this book, you will understand why. Fraenkel discusses in depth a selection of poems from Horace's Epodes, Satires, Epistles, and Odes. You may not always agree with his conclusions. (I think that his eagerness to find unity in each book of the Odes led him to inject literary significance into Ode I.38 and topical significance into Ode IV.1 that are not there.) However, I also think that all readers will appreciate the intelligence, literary sensitivity, and common sense that pervade his analyses.
For the Odes, I also recommend Steele Commager's The Odes of Horace and Daniel Garrison's commentary.

Horace is of course a little out of favour nowadays, because he's seen as the "official" Augustan poet, even more so than Vergil and certainly more so, for obvious reasons, than Ovid. But if you are dealing with golden or silver Latin, you still have to grapple with Horace. This delightful, and somewhat idiosyncratic text by Fraenkel takes Horace key works (key, in the opinion of Fraenkel) and applies delightful to read and withering intellect to each of the works, unravelling it's mysteries and important features. Fraenkel's treatment of Epode XVI is still, in my opinion, the best reading of this highly interesting poem. A must for any scholar of Latin Poetry.

Totally loved this book. U will learn a lot about Horace, his poetry, the history of his time, & learn a good deal about scholarly debate on poetics.
