Kate Chopin's writing is very easy-reading compared to some of her contemporaries. She captures imagery so well - you can definitely imagine the entire scene she is depicting - without being overly verbose. I first read The Awakening when I was in high school for summer reading and I "didn't get it". Now re-reading it at 25 (with slightly more life experience and just more reading experience), I loved it! It's an interesting glimpse into the world of women in the late 1800s America. But more than that, it is an interesting glimpse into the nature of the human soul and its desire for passion, creativity, and self-actualization. Even knowing the ending, re-reading this book made me "think about it" for several days after concluding it - I love books that do that!

I really like this edition because it includes several of her best short stories as well. The introduction to the book gives great insight into the life and motivations of Chopin, which gave me greater understanding of the story itself. The end of the book includes commentaries on her novel from those of her time along with questions to help the reader ponder it more deeply. Chopin-lovers will appreciate this collection and its in-depth introduction, and those new to Chopin will appreciate it the opportunity to explore her writings further after The Awakening leaves them thinking. ;)

Kate Chopin is a very skilled novelist. Her writing expressed the thoughts of the women who faced the punishment of not being able to be with another guy. The Awakening is a very extravagant story, it involves a woman who falls in love with a mysterious man, however, it was illegal in the 1800s to love another man other than your husband. Throughout the story, Edna, the main character, has to face many obstacles. She has to make the decision whether to trust her heart or play it safe. The Awakening also explains the journey and path that Edna takes to find her true self. She can only hide so much from her husband. The Awakening was an excellent book, I learned how many women felt and the struggles that they had to face in the 1800s. The Awakening taught me what true love was and what to do about it. It is a great read, I hope you enjoy it!
