PLOT OR PREMISE:
Devlin Tracy is a claims investigator working for an insurance company. The VP gives him a case to investigate -- a friend of the President of the company is in a sanatorium, and one of the other patients changed their beneficiary on their insurance policy before they died, and the doctor at the sanatorium got the winfall. The President is afraid for his friend, that he'll be pressured to do the same, and wants Trace to make sure there's nothing weird going on.
.
WHAT I LIKED:
Warren Murphy was also creator of several other series, and while some of those were kind of pulp-style, this one is a full "standard" novel. Wise-cracking, determined, but not always the fastest to figure things out. Trace works hard, keeps poking until something shakes loose, and then grabs on and won't let go until whatever scheme falls apart. All the elements of the series are here -- drinking like a fish, sleeping with suspects, wearing a little frog pin that records conversations, and a bit of a blundering style that worms his way into lots of situations. There are sub-stories with drugs and potential lawsuits, but mostly it is just about Trace shaking things up.
.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
He has a girlfriend, of sorts, and her portrayal in this one is more annoying than usual for the series. Plus she comes in near the end as a super-detective to help solve the case, but Trace was doing fine on his own. She helps him out, as she often does, but she was mostly superfluous for this outing.

DISCLOSURE:
I received no compensation, not even a free copy, in exchange for this review. I am not personal friends with the author, nor did I follow him on social media.

LIke this one from page one. I LMAO through the whole thing. What a good one. Just a well written book with loads of comedy and a hell of a story.

Trace is blond, 6'3" and a hunk. He's an insurance investigator for Fidelity Insurance. He's the go to guy for Fidelity.

Trace is also a lover of booze. Vodka to be exact. He lives in Las Vegas with Chico in a luxury condo. Chico is a part time hooker and deals at one of the casino's. They have quite a relationship.

Trace also has loads of friends in the casino industry. In fact he has loads of friends everywhere. Those friends don't care that he's a drunk. He gets the job done.

Trace's contact at Fidelity, Marks, whom Trace calls Groucho, catches up with him and wants him to go to NJ.

Trace isn't happy with that. His ex and his two kids live in NJ and Trace is sure that there's a contract out on him. A contract put out by his ex.

Marks wants him to investigate the death of a man at a sanitorium. Before he died he changed his will leaving everything to the man who runs the Sanitorum. Of course Fidelity is the insurance company who will be paying out and the mans family is up in arms.

Also a good friend of the owner of Fidelity is a patient in that same Sanitorium and the owner wants to make sure that this mans wife gets everything if he passes.

Well Trace goes to NJ and lands in the middle of a great whodunit. Loads of action and a great guy who gets to the bottom of things. Of course Chico shows up the help.

We have crooked lawyers. Looker lawyers, mystics and a couple of folks who are out to steal all they can get.

Just a great read and you can bet the rest of the Trace novels are on my to get list. Five Stars.

Trace #1 by Warren Murphy. Devlin Tracy works as a freelance insurance investigator for Garrison Fidelity. He lives in Los Vegas with his part time hooker, Chico who is part Japanese and part Italian. He’s asked to investigate a claim at a sanitarium where an old man recently died after changing his will, removing his family and placing the doctor as his beneficiary. Trace is to find out if something may be a little crooked at the sanitarium. When he arrives, he learns that all is not what it seems, but he can’t figure everything out until Chico looks into his investigation and discovers what’s what. This series by The Destroyer author is another fun read, and moves fast, with interesting characters. It’s a lot of fun.

I wasn't sure when I first started reading this, if I thought Trace was obnoxious or funny after a few chapters I concluded he is definitely funny and a drunk who still manages to do a thorough job of investigating what seems to be an insurance scam.
What he uncovers is much more sinister and the unusual story and characters make this a really good read.
The writer provides a likeable character for all the wrong reasons with a blunt view of those around him and a real bad drinking habit yet he still comes off as likeable and someone you would want on your side.
I found I kept going back to this book whenever I put it down as it kept my interest and made me laugh in places and cringe in others a thoroughly entertaining read.

Author Warren Murphy has a worthy side hero here with the detective adventures of Trace, lounge lizard and thorough reprobate. For fans of Remo Williams the Destroyer, this is a great change of pace and a sarcastic delve into the seamier side of Murphy's imagination. I have all seven volumes of the paperbacks (collected thanks to the grace of Amazon's used book department), so how nice to see this digital Kindle edition made available to bring Trace to a new generation of readers.
