De l'Imprimerie Royale, Paris 1702, grand in 4 (30,2x22,4cm), (2) 292pp. The book was presented to the sovereign January 9, 1702 in strenna. It took forty years to gather the material of the book. Beautiful printing large margins.

Library's copy lacks printed preface (signed by Jean Anisson but attributed to Paul Tallement), which was suppressed shortly after publication. A MS copy of the preface has been inserted inside the preliminary leaves. Contemporary mottled brown calf binding, probably a presentation binding from the workshop of the royal binder (Luc-Antoine Boyet) ; covers embossed with French royal arms in gilt Museum Number 38041800159964.

In 1991, the Petite Académie became the Académie Royale des Inscriptions. The history in medals became their sole project in 1692; Racine and Boileau were members. A new method for a new project: no previous examples were worthy of the Academy’s attention as men of letters.

Philippe Grandjean was commissioned to cut punches based on Jaugeon's designs, and modified them to form the 'roman du roi' first used here.
