Stith Thompson was an American scholar of folklore. Stith Thompson was born in Bloomfield, Nelson County, Kentucky, on March 7, 1885. He was the son of John Warden Thompson and Eliza McClaskey, who were farmers. He grew up mostly in Indianapolis, Ind. He was distantly related to Abraham Lincoln, and his appearance – tall and loose-jointed – was reminiscent of that famous relative.
