Stith Thompson was an American scholar of folklore. Stith Thompson was born in Bloomfield, Nelson County, Kentucky, on March 7, 1885. He was the son of John Warden Thompson and Eliza McClaskey, who were farmers. He grew up mostly in Indianapolis, Ind. He was distantly related to Abraham Lincoln, and his appearance – tall and loose-jointed – was reminiscent of that famous relative. In Indianapolis, Ind., he completed his secondary education at Manual Training High School

If you can buy only one fairytale book a year, buy this. Why? Because the chooser knows more about the folktales of all countries than anyone else in the world, and the choice is the flower of the flock." ―New York Times Book Review

Look. Stith Thompson was the most important archivist of folktales America earned this last century. And although as in any anthology, some feel like duds on first reading, our man Stith is the master of the craft of collecting and dismantling these stories for their elements. This book will spin your head and give you some neolithic and paleolithic story motives that don't fit into our current morality any more than the hand-carved decorative roof columns fit into our world of machine-pressed goods. But the truth is there.

Always read these around a campfire, aloud, with a little whisky, and you will find how they come alive in your world.

The author scholar selects one hundred folktales from the European tradition. The top five are from Norway (16 folktales), Italy, Russia and Germany (13 folktales each) and France (10 folktales). This is followed by Sweden (8 folktales), Denmark and Greece (7 folktales each). These are folktales with an interesting story, but no editorial support. Children raised on Walt Disney will not have heard of most of these folktales. It’s a pity that there are no illustrations and larger fonts to make it more attractive to children.

I have many personal feelings about this book, which I have read at least 3 times. I grew up with and am best friends with his youngest son and met Mr. Petrov countless times. On many occassions I had the unique priviledge of being able to discuss his book and the events which took place with the author in person. Still, had I never met Mr. Petrov, I am sure I would not have enjoyed this book any less. This book ranks with such books as 'Papillon', and 'To Live and Die in Shanghai', as one of the greatest true life prison stories ever told. Calling the ordeals that Mr. Petrov survived 'Kafkaesque' is an understatement. If you can find a copy of this book, I guarantee you will be forever satisfied.
