Dame Catherine Ann Cookson, DBE (née McMullen; 27 June 1906 – 11 June 1998) was a British author. She is in the top 20 of most widely read British novelists with sales topping 100 million, while retaining a relatively low profile in the world of celebrity writers. Her books were inspired by her deprived youth in South Tyneside, North East England, the setting for her novels.

Being completely new to Catherine Cookson, my first impression was that The Mallen Litter was like an intense, endless TV soap opera condensed into a book. Full of suppressed feelings, emotion all over the place, secret rendezvous and family feuds left, right and centre, it hurries you along with its doomed characters who never have anything go right for them. I found the whole atmosphere of the book very dismal and the plot to be pretty unbelieveable. But then again I think that's the point.

The white streak turns up yet again on the left side of a man's black hair. Will he be
able to shake the evil that it seems to foretell? Will love and peace come to him
or more violence and despair? Only time will tell for none other can.

This story of family intrigue and not very well hidden misconduct on the part of two well known people, carried on over many years, was very well written, easy reading, and though disturbing at times in the end a really fine story. I think the ending was maybe predictable to another writer, but would not so patent to almost anyone else. The style, the sense of British class consciousness, the times about which the book was written were well described, well woven into the story. I thoroughly enjoyed it despite its aging on my shelves for many years before it had to be read.
