One of the first rules of surveillance is to vary the vehicle you’re sitting around in. Luckily, when Bill had gone off to Australia, he’d left me with a set of keys for his house and the car.

Val Mcdermid ft Shelley’s Rover in Bill’s garage, with a message on the office answering machine telling her to hang on to the coupé for the time being. I felt sure this was a hardship she’d be able to bear, always supposing she didn’t leap to the conclusion that the reason I wasn’t back with her Rover was that her beloved heap was in some garage being restored to its former glory.

Dream
bad language made me not want to read any more of this author....
Shame, because the author writes well, but I have no need for vulgarity to enjoy a good novel
Hap
The author has written one of her usual great reads. Great plot and greater characters.
Thetalas
We've been reading McDermid's Kate Brannigan set in order, "Break" being #4 of currently 6 novels. In this one, Kate solves two demanding cases, one of industrial sabotage, including two murders; and another dealing with the theft of high value art works, including the death of the main crooks handling the fencing of the goods. As usual, partner Bill is off somewhere and gets nary a mention; meanwhile Kate runs all over, doing surveillance and car chasing, even through several European countries. When she breaks into an Italian villa and even gets into a safe that magically appears to her, our tolerance for the ease with which clues fall into her lap rapidly expired.

This seems to be the the trouble with these tales. We’d like to really like Kate, but her investigations get as tiresome as her rocky relationship with neighbor Richard. Moreover, many feel these books from the 90's aren't holding up particularly well in these modern times of tablets and smartphones. Our three stars just might be generous; and we're really not that anxious to plow through the last two books in the set.

Kate Brannigan is a Manchester-based private investigator that is having a bad day. She is investigating the robbery of a Monet painting from one of her client's homes. What really gets her craw is that during the previous day she installed the client's home security system. Kate is also involved with a second case involving industrial sabotage. Kerrchem is facing a rash of lawsuits after one of its cleaning fluids killed a man. The police stated that the man died from inhaling arsenic.
Kate does her best to solve these two cases despite her trouble with her boyfriend. Apparently they are at a crossroads after a previous case and they are having trouble getting back in the swing of things.
I knew I had to read more of Val McDermid's work after reading A PLACE OF EXECUTION. One thing I enjoyed about CLEAN BREAK was that it was easy to read and I liked the characters. Kate is not a superwoman but she works very hard at what she does. She is loyal to herself and her friends. She knows when she is wrong and she knows when to ask for help. I really enjoyed reading her story and I intend to read the other books in the Kate Brannigan series in the near future.
Goldcrusher
It's like a sorbet - light and refreshing. It's not too heavy on character development, but just enough to keep the characters interesting without an Oprah-esque heaviness. It's got a couple of different mysteries running at one time, but the writer handles that with ease. There was one section (a chase through Europe) that was a bit long, but other than that, this is a very good, very quick read. It's similar in style and tone to Patricia Cornwell's early work. And beware that it's a British book, so there are a few phrases that might be a bit difficult to understand at first.
Direbringer
While this wasn't a story about serial killers or any of the darker manner of mystery books, it was an engaging read that had Kate burning the candle at both ends to solve both the cases on her docket.

I was completely won over by the characters. I thought they were exceptionally well done. Along with Kate's own humor, this was a very good read.
