I'll admit the book on Dostoevsky may be over my head. But Alex DeJonge's biographies of Peter the Great, Rasputin and, in particular at this point in our politics, his biography of Stalin and the Making of the Soviet Union, are great. I think the info about Stalin really helps to understand the political psychology of the Russian state, which has always had autocrats in charge.

De Jonge, Alex, Dostoevsky and the age of intensity PG3328 Z6 D37 Secker & Warburg, 1975. A look at Dostoevsky, the writer, as an artist whose works, though tremendously advanced and influential in his time and in the present, were a portrait of the age in which he lived. This book is an overwhelming material that not only deals with Dostoevsky and his work, but tries to connect and shed some light on the influences and other great writers in connection to this Russian genius. The main point is that Dostoevsky is in his work and that the fluidity of his works not only changes the way we look at them, but makes us learn more about Dostoevsky himself.

My approach to epilepsy differs from that of Alex de Jonge’s Dostoevsky and The Age of Intensity. In other words, epilepsy is not always an intensive experience; it comprises intensity and its effacement at the same time.
