He returned to Scotland in 1987 to become a full-time writer. He became known to the literary world through his first full-length book, Hugh MacDiarmid and the Scottish Renaissance. He published many collections of poetry, from Kythings and Other Poems (1969), In Appearances (1971) and Realities Poems (1980) to Selected Poems 1965–1990 (1991), Selected New Poems 1987–1996 (1998) and Collected Poems 1965–2005 (2006). His Autobiography of a Poet was published by Ramsay Head Press in 1986.

These have frequently suffered from diffuseness and flatness of tone, but in 1980 the publication of Realities Poems, a book-length sequence, marked a new achievement. Nationality: British. Born: Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, 11 January 1933. Much of the subject matter is, characteristically, hical, but the enjoyment of family life-and how freshly and affectionately done are all these passages-is set within a wider framework, partly philosophical and partly drawn from aspects of existence today seen as a threat to the caring family and to the aspirations that stem from the confidence such living breeds.

The poems draw sources and materials together into one dense fabric. Many of Duncan’s best-known poems were shaped by ideas associated with Olson and the Black Mountain School of poetry.
