Robert Southey (/ˈsaʊði/ or /ˈsʌði/; 12 August 1774 – 21 March 1843) was an English poet of the Romantic school, one of the Lake Poets along with William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and England's Poet Laureate for 30 years from 1813.

Southey, Robert was the son of an unsuccessful linen-draper in Bristol, where he was born. He was sent to Westminster School, and in 1792 went to Oxford. His friendship with Coleridge began in 1794, and with him he joined in the scheme of a "pantisocracy.
