Akhmatova, whose real surname was Gorenko, is one of the two greatest women poets in the history of Russian poetry. The daughter of a merchant marine engineer, she spent much of her childhood in Tsarskoye Selo, the village outside St. Petersburg where the Tsar's summer palace was located. The regal nature of her work is perhaps in part attributable to this royal environment. Her first books of poetry, Vecher (Evening) (1912) and Chyotki (Rosary) (1913; reissued eleven times), brought her critical acclaim. From 1910 to 1918 she was married to Nikolay Gumilev.

Great translations of a major artist of her time with detailed notes and introduction. A tour de force work. Little more to say here so long as the author cannot be brought back to life and made to speak to us in English herself.

If you're thinking of buying this book, do. It's the rare kind of book you can open at random and immediately get lost in.

Both an extraordinary woman and an extraordinary poet, Akhmatova addresses the horrors of the worst of the Soviet period and she also speaks of love and passion as a woman far in advance of her times. Her work is intense and deeply moving.

Excellent in all ways.

These are very good translations of one of the 20th century's great poets. Seems to me that's enough to own a complete poems.

This is a beautiful collection for anyone interested in history and poetry. War is heartbreaking, documentation is important. I am grateful for the artist's capturing the period she lived.

I am studying Russian writers of the 1930s particularly those who fled to Paris after the Bolshevik Revoltion of 1917. Akhmatova and Marina Tsvetaeva were part of the pre-Revolution intelligencia and suffered terribly from the Reds suppression of artistic freedom. The Complete Poems of AA was helpful to me in this study. The photos, the biography and the dating of individual poems aided my work. Since I am not skilled in Russian, I cannot comment on the quality of the translation but the very moving English version of AA's expression is what I would hope is even better in her native tongue. There is no doubt that even in translation AA and MT were among the great poets of the 20th Century.

No complaints so far on binding, but I doubt you can photocopy anything and leave the binding intact.
