John Francis Alexander Heath-Stubbs OBE (9 July 1918 – 26 December 2006) was an English poet and translator. He is known for verse influenced by classical myths, and for a long Arthurian poem, Artorius (1972).

John Francis Alexander Heath-Stubbs OBE (9 July 1918 – 26 December 2006) was an English poet and translator. Heath-Stubbs was born in Streatham, London, although the family lived in Hampstead. His parents were Francis Heath-Stubbs and his wife, who was a concert pianist under the name Edie Marr. His boyhood was largely spent near the New Forest.

Heath-Stubbs was at the centre of the New Romantic school. Too long he has been sidelined by shifts of critical fashion. The Second World War left him as almost the sole representative of one stream of English poetry. He remains crucial to the 1940s and ’50s, and was a popular presence into the 1980s, composing his later poems in his head and reciting from memory. Selected Poems includes a critical preface by John Clegg who essentialises and celebrates the work. Three of Heath-Stubbs’ translations of Leopardi - revered by subsequent translators, and long out of print - are included

John Francis Alexander Heath-Stubbs OBE (9 July 1918 - 26 December 2006) was an English poet, literary critic, anthologist, and translator, known for his verse influenced by classical myths, and for the long Arthurian poem Artorius (1972). Heath-Stubbs was born in London, and educated at Bembridge School and Queen's College, Oxford. He lived for a time in the 1950s at Zennor in Cornwall.

None the less, he was no reactionary, but a major poet who displayed considerable versatility in his prolific output, which continued till the end of the 20th century. In his introduction to his 1988 Collected Poems, he wrote: "What I, and many of my friends (at Oxford) rejected was what seemed to us the over-simplistic political commitments of our immediate predecessors, the poets of the 1930s.
