Storytelling is a universal language we all share, regardless of who we are, how old we are, or where we come from. Lamplight Tales is an original collection of the kind of tales that were passed on to me as a child, when family and friends gathered around oil lamps at night and entertained each other. Lamplight Tales sent chills crawling over our skin, but the flickering flames from the lamps held our fear at bay and kept the warmth of friendship, family, and fun in our hearts. Are these tales true? Some are as true as the gospel. And the others? I hope not, but I was certainly convinced that they could have happened! Lamplight Tales work just as well around campfires or in shadowy places on sunny days. Enjoy this unique part of our heritage, and let these stories inspire you to tell some tales of your own!

"Lamplight Tales," from the nimble pen of master storyteller Roberta Simpson Brown is a collection of 28 tales culled from childhood when storytelling was a major form of after supper entertainment. Ms. Brown's family used a lamp to guard against the night; we sat around a fireplug under the street light telling ghost stories.
Titles like 'Ghost Chains, 'Wildcat Cave,' 'Hauntspitality,' 'He'll Come Knocking,' and 'Wings' pull you into yarns that will send chills racing down your spine, no matter how you have insulated yourself against the unknown.
'Night Walkers' is intriguing, because wherever a man-made lake has been built you will find locals who tell this story in different versions. So many tales, so many places can only make you wonder how much is made up and how much is true? Stuart Woods used the same story in "Under the Lake" about a location in GA. We used a smidgen of it in "Qualifying Laps." The ghosts of people who refused to give up their land until forced out in the wake of progress. They return to haunt the buried land and those who took it from them.
A fantastic collection to read with a flashlight under the covers or on a lake where you're parked above someone's land or maybe their drowned grave.
Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps," "Sins of the Fathers," and "Taxes, Stumbling Blocks & Pitfalls for Authors 2007."
The spoken tradition of storytelling is alive and well in Roberta Simpson Brown and her Lamplight Tales give us stories which are concise and classic. From the decapitated ghost at Damron's Creek, to the touching Christmas Tree tale and including the eerie tale titled "Crawl Space", each gruesome or fearful or heartfelt story is well-used from Roberta's decades of successful performances for children of all ages. Be careful where and when you read it!!
