I remember visiting the Edgar Allan Poe museum the last time I was in Richmond, Virginia. At the time I don't think I had read any of his work, except perhaps The Raven. The museum was a creepy place, as you might imagine, with a lot of dark wood and eerie pictures and a strange garden that seemed to be in permanent shadow. 1) The Gold Bug A treasure hunt story involving cryptography, directions, clues, skulls, and a lot of digging.

Thick Royal 4to. 381pp. Frontispiece and 23 further full-page plates, collated all present and in excellent order, also illustrated title-page, in-text chapter head and tail-pieces, all by the seminal Harry Clarke, leading figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement, who with this book made his name as an illustrator, and whose style is comparable to Aubrey Beardsley. This volume is excellent as new, no bookplate, inscriptions or marks of any kind, utterly unaffected by foxing or browning. Beautifully bound in excellent bright gilt lettered and illustrated blue cloth, featuring Harry Clarke gilt embossed vignette to upper and to spine. Housed and protected in excellent matt clipped pink Harry Clarke elaborately illustrated dustwrapper featuring goddess to upper, skull and spider to spine, lady and ghoul to lower. In a fluke of publication, this volume has two dustwrappers, both in great condition. Lower edge untrimmed, top edge blue to match cloth. A beautifully produced volume, fit to grace the library of reader, scholar and collector alike, and for the fan of the golden age of illustration.

I already have a book of the complete works of Edgar Allan Poe, but I bought this book solely for the illustrations. Edgar Allan Poe is one of my very favorite authors and his work will always haunt and frighten me. True horror comes from allowing yourself to be fully immersed in the story and understand the true nature of what the author is trying to convey. These illustrations by Harry Clarke are quite probably the best depictions of the terrors as Poe put them on the page. While we can all make our own images in our minds, Clarke's interpretations give us more to explore and consider concerning Poe's psyche. Poe will always be a master of horror and suspense that will keep us frightened for centuries to come.

Please note, I only state there is some sexual content in that there is some implied sexuality in some of the stories, but nothing explicit.

I bought this specifically for the illustrations by Harry Clarke. The pictures are flat out amazing,
the detail is equally astonishing. This is a big hardback book, and the paper is very high quality,
but I am concerned that the binding is glued instead of sewn. I don't know enough about publishing/binding
to know if there are any book bindings that are sewn anymore even, but I anticipate having to get this
book reglued at some point because it's so big (this is based on experiences with other big books with glue
based binding). This is only a minor concern though; overall, this is a great price for such a gorgeous book.
The illustrations enhance and amplify Poe's stories in a perfect marriage of text and picture. I usually
don't want illustrations with my books (I want the image left up to me) but this is a lovely, lovely exception.
One last note: this was a present that I ordered eight days early and it took two weeks to arrive. I don't
know if the blame lies with the seller or the delivery system, but it obviously didn't arrive in time for the birthday.
It seems to me that Amazon isn't nearly as fast as they used to be, shipping wise. One of the main reasons I love Amazon
is for the free super saver shipping, but I'm going to check other sources first if I continue to receive items past reasonable
delivery dates.

I collect Heritage Press editions, mainly classical works of literature that I have read in my youth and remember with great fondness. One particular favorite is "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe's macabre tales are effectively chilling and even all these years later have the ability to shock. I own several editions of Poe's works and am especially interested in the illustrated editions as each artist has a singular style that enriches my appreciation of Poe's tales.

This 1941 Heritage Press edition has beautiful marbled board covers and cloth-bound spine. The book comes in a slipcover but my purchase did not unfortunately come with a Sandglass pamphlet. The book itself contains an introduction by Vincent Starrett and photogravures of the original aquatints by William Sharp.

I have been keeping an eye out for this book since I first saw it in my High School Library in the early '60s. What was memorable were the surreal illustrations, and were the best effort I had ever seen in capturing the mood of Poe's stories. This book is a very fine production. It is a black cloth hardback, and the pages are oversized and heavy bond paper slightly yellow off-white color. Most of the illustrations are black and white pen & ink, with a few in color. All of the illustrations are single page, that is the other side of the page is blank; a mark of high quality. This is the definate 'Must Have' edition for anyone interested in Poe's works. I would also rate this book as a 'Best Buy', given the price to quality ratio.
