Volume 2 is of course the second book in a series of books written in the '70s featuring new and unusual superheroes. These heroes are created by some of the best talent around. Each volume in the series is different in that a book can have several stories or just one, and in this case, Volume 2 features six new heroes and their stories.

Doc Phoenix is in many ways like Doc Savage, that earlier pulp hero; Cordwainer Bird is a hero based upon the pen name of Harlan Ellison and is written by Ellison himself; there is the return of Phillip Jose Farmer's hero from Book One, Greatheart Silver; we have Viva, a west coast prostitute turn heroine; SPV166--The underground Express is the story of three female ex-cons who work out of a New York City subway car; and the Camden Kid is an unlikely cowboy from Camden New Jersey. Six really great stories in one volume.

These are awesome collections of original fiction, spearheaded by Preiss. Dunno why they didn't reach much of an audience but I enjoy the hell out of them, especially Goulart's Gypsy adventures. Recommended.

Weird Heroes - A New American Pulp - Volume 1 - Byron Preiss [2014-01-31 499]

Byron Preiss, (1953-2005) a very talented individual with a deep affection for pulp fictional heroes and illustrated stories, edited a series of paperbacks in this format for Pyramid Books.

I actually purchased this book for the included interview with Fritz Leiber. Although published in 1975 used editions are available at reasonable prices. For those interested a book worth acquiring.

The stories here are ok, but the standout is Philip Jose Farmer's Greatheart Silver story, where all the septuagenarian and octagenarian pulp heroes and villains meet in a final, very fatal battle.

There is also an interesting interview with Fritz Leiber, and this is what he had to say about the Grey Mouser :

"I mean the idea was to have supermen who weren't all that great, you know, supermen who drank and who might lose out, who always won partly by good fortune as well as by being muscular and intelligent and so on."

Stories by Philip Jose Farmer, Harlan Ellison, White, Englehart, Elliott S. Maggin and Swift, Byron Preiss, art by Jim Steranko, Neal Adams, Reese, Fabian and Maroto. I read this as a young man, and especially enjoyed the story by Englehart, which was a take-off on Doc Savage.
