Allende is a masterful storyteller who effortlessly absorbs you in the intimate details of the lives of the characters in her novels, to the point where you feel like you have a personal relationship with each character

My first taste of Allende. Brutal and beautiful, straightforward and metaphoric, lusty and tragic. The author brings all the paradoxes of life together by telling the story of a man, a family, of love and the reflection sometimes necessary to know it-- with a narrative that never drags and sometimes enthralls. Wonderful writing. Truly great story telling.

I have read and enjoyed most of Isabel Allende's novels but this is the exception. The characters are interesting but I found myself scanning many of the pages because there was just way too much detail. The plot? I finished the novel because I hoped it would get better but it did not. I would not recommend it.

Allende is my heroine. Great writing, great story. Enjoyed reading "a good book". She took an account of her husband's life and fictionalized it to an amazing story of discovery and self-actualization. Just sit back, enjoy exceptional writing, intriguing lives and captivating tale. Allende is a master of writing.
