Paradise by Judith McNaught was an excellent book. This is a five star romance from beginning to end--no weak places anywhere. I prefer historicals but after reading some of McNaughts and loving them I decided to try this contemporary. I did not think I'd like the modern setting but I did. This is the story of a young wealthy heiress to a department store chain based in Chicago and the son of a poor family who has brains and a willingness to fight hard for the ultimate success he wants so badly. On one July 4th, they meet and find passion and young love unexpectedly. Though neither is really ready for it, they are forced to marry only to be separated by circumstances and deep hurt that keeps them apart for 11 years. By that time, he is at the head of a corporate empire and she is the interim President of her family's flagship store. And both are wounded souls that have nothing but disdain for each other, believing each has betrayed the other. Ah, but true love will conquer all--and in a tale well told, it does.

I loved Matt Farrell, a hero to die for. He is handsome and rugged and never waivers in either his love for Meredith or his willingness to fight for what he wants--including her. I liked Meredith's courage and her willingness to "go on" despite what life has thrown at her to make something of her life. And I loved her softer side that added compassion to a successful businesswoman's strength. The fact that she looked like a "young Grace Kelly" didn't hurt either.

This story has great depth, wonderful characters, meaningful scenes and natural intriguing action. It made me both laugh and cry. I have read and reviewed many of Judith McNaught's books (see my other reviews) and this one is well deserving of the 5 star rating I'm giving it. It is definitely a keeper, one to be re-read and enjoyed again and again--a truly excellent romance. I did not want it to end. You will not be disappointed! Judith McNaught, this is superb writing!

Here's the whole Paradise Series--the rest are excellent, too:

1. Paradise (1991)
2. Perfect (1993)
3. Night Whispers (1998)
4. Someone to Watch Over Me (2003)
5. Every Breath You Take (2005)
6. Someone Like You (formerly entitled: Can't Take My Eyes Off of You) (coming in 2014)

I first read this book more than 10 years ago I loved it then, but as I purchased the digital, I wondered if the magic would still be there. It was! I'll admit, that I skipped through a lot of the backstory, because I remembered. But once I got to the present, the story hit its sweet spot and the magic was there! It was easy to root for Meredith and Matt. The misunderstandings were understandable and the machinations entertaining.

Magnificent!!! Mere words could not express how I loved the entire book - what a most beautiful, tender and sweet love story that I did not want to end - thank you, Judith McNaught for making me cry and laugh, for NOT making me feel, this is just a work of fiction - because, to me, it is REAL and ALIVE - yes, I could visualize them not only in my mind but also in the innermost core of my heart - PARADISE AND PERFECT - how I wish these two books has been made into a movie!!! Your novels are million times more worthy and deserving in a widescreen than anything else out there - you have a heart of pure gold, JM and thank you for making me enjoy my retirement with your books in my hands - here's wishing you more golden success !!!

Are all Judith McNaught's books this good? I am not typically a big fan of romance novels, but after reading the glowing reviews of PARADISE here on Amazon, I picked it up at the library. Oh my, I can truly say that I lived and breathed this novel for the entire week. Even though it was written more than a dozen years ago, it still seems timeless and modern. Not only does Judith weave a brilliant story, she elicits emotions on every level - from anger, humor, lust, forgiveness, and ultimately love. I am still baffled by Meredith's ability to forgive her father after he deprived her not only of her mother, but also her husband. I guess learning to manage her tyranical father honed her for all the later trials in her life. Matt is just too good to be true - I loved his drive, decisiveness, leadership, and tenderness. As another reviewer already said, I particularly liked that Matt and Meredith's conversations had such intimacy, even when talking about business. The only negative I have to say is that the author rushed through several loose ends of the story all in the last few pages. After such detail in telling the story the ending was a little rushed, but that is a very minor negative. I hope you will read this book and savor its magic as much as I did. Guess I'll be reading PERFECT next; after my emotions have settled down a bit.

I cannot see myself lending this one out, because I don't think I would ever get it back. It is a book that you want to read again and again. I loved that we got to see the characters when they were young, and watch them grow up. Usually, I want to skip the background and get straight to the romance, but the backstory was so wee written and heart wrenching, that I didn't mind taking my time to savor it. The romance was unbelievable. I loved the chemistry. I loved that they were both strong, yet vulnerable around each other. I loved how much he wanted her, and the fact that he was willing to do anything to get her. McNaught is definitely one of my top three romance writers. I eat up her stories with a spoon.

A little too long and inconsistent with the details of main characters' business dealings woven into their personal relationship. Drags on a bit and sometimes lost my interest.
