The story is great. I have read other novels in Spanish by Esmeralda Santiago and was very excited when I saw this one. Being a puertorrican, I easily follow the story in my mind's eye.
That said, I'm extremely disappointed of the poor quality of the Spanish writing. It seems it was written in English, translated by a machine (which is fine), and NO ONE took the time to review and edit the results. Corrections are badly needed, to the point of creating distractions as you read. These comments have nothing to do with the English words/phrase written as they would be pronounced in Spanish by a non-English speaker. I get that, and it's actually funny to read.
In summary and comparison, her other Spanish books were so carefully written, that I feel like I'm reading a "first draft" that mistakenly got published.

Como de costumbre, una obra excepcional. He leído Cuando era Puertorriqueña; Casi una mujer; El amante Turco, “Conquistadora” y esta novela consolida la calidad literaria de ésta autora. Leer estos libros es como ver una película, puedes realmente hacer las imagenes en tu mente mientras lees y “El sueño de América” no es la excepción.

Loved the novel. Even if fictional, there are lots of girls in similar situations and was happy the novel had a happy ending.

Santiago doesn't dissapoint. Eventhough this is not a real story, Santiago makes it very believable. The abuse towards women in the Hispanic culture continues to astonish me.

AMAZING book. Not only a fascinating look into a culture, but a real page turner as well! LOVED it!
Very easy to read and entertaining. The development of the characters is impressive and you get to understand the pressures and way of thinking of battered women, without pitying them.
