The Trouble with Normal: Sex, Politics, and the Ethics of Queer Life is a book by Michael Warner, in which the author discusses the role of same-sex marriage as a goal for gay rights activists. First published in 1999 by The Free Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, it was re-published in 2000 in paperback by Harvard University Press. It was vert funny and kept your interest. I now have a new author that I will enjoy!
Allison is about to turn fifty; her husband has left her for a bimbo twenty years younger; her mother is a chronic hypochondriac; her daughters, kind hearted but self-centred, still live at home; she dislikes her boss, calling him Simon the Slime; and the cat has been poisoned. A simple lie leads her to ask for a doctor's certificate for a three day absence. Instead the young locum signs her off for three weeks due to workplace stress.
If you are or have been a member of the "sandwich generation" you will identify with much of Ally's life. I certainly did and was cheering for her to find a way to relax, accept that the marriage was over and start to enjoy herself. The characters are believable - and there's a very funny scene with Simon the Slime. Sheila Norton's light, deft touch makes this a truly enjoyable read
