I loved, loved, LOVED SPQBOL, but this fictionalized account of how the Queens got started read like a corny Liftime movie most of the way through. The Queens kept getting into one predictable situation after another, committing every relationshop faux pas known to womankind. I actually got bored about halfway through and the ending was SO predictable I skimmed the last few pages. And the Southern-ness was downright OVERDONE. I'm a Southerner and even I don't use that many expressions. You seem to get every single one in this book and that makes it cheesy. I guess if I hadn't read a bunch of her other books I wouldn't be expecting most of them. By the end I was actually thinking "Okay, this is where she's gonna say 'I swanee' or 'boyhidee'" or whatever expression I've already read a paragraph about where it originated in another one of Jill's books. I guess if you're a fan of Jill, read it if you must, but I would have been just as happy reading the Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love all over again.

Jill Conner Browne is a real woman. Although she swears that this book is a work of fiction, it comes from the heart of a woman who has faced the same daily grind, struggles, and obstacles that most of us face. She aimed specifically for the less financially secure in this book, and those who weren't destined to be prom queens or kings. Which refers to most of us. And she makes it clear that not only is it okay to be different from the "in" crowd, it is to be celebrated. And that our dearest friends should be cared for in our lives. Her character, aptly named Jill, learned that in her friends, career, and her own moxie she had all that she needed to be the boss queen!

I laughed and cried. I read this book straight through and did not put it down.
This is such a good read, showcasing the depth of friendships and illustrating the ebbs and flows from childhood into adulthood.

I am a big fan of the Sweet Potato Queens! I have the cat-eye bejeweled sunglasses and the tiara, so can honestly say this wannabee is slated for greatness - reading this book will make you feel the same way!
For those of you who have never heard of the SPQs, this book will shed some light on them - the book is fiction, but the bond that the girls (and guy) form is explained. This delightful book shows the origins of the friendship, and the many adventures the SPQs had - good and bad, and the friendships that made them cope with it and laugh with it.
If you want to read a book to laugh and forget about everything that's going on, this book is for you - It even has recipes in the back that are written with the SPQ humor -
Who knows? Maybe I will go down to Jackson MS one year in my own queenly regalia and join the fun of the St. Paddy's Day parade...
You might have fun too - or reread this book to put you there without traveling!

I loved listening to the audio version of this book. It kept me company on a long drive and the time just passed so quickly as I lived vicariously through their adventures. I admired so much their long lived friendship and loyalty and found myself just knowing that this is something I and my four friends would just love together. I'm amazed it hasn't been made into a movie.

And, the recipes!!! I have made two of them and they are sooooo good! I hope the "Rest in Peace" does get launched!
I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. So many of the story lines were just unbearably predictable. Without trying to give anything away, you can see what's coming a country mile. POSSIBLE SPOILERS!! The gay guy shows up with a girlfriend who's got enormous feet, wears a wig and refuses to undress. Hmmmm - anyone know how that'll turn out? A boyfriend follows you, calls you constantly and refuses to let you out of his sight. Wonder where that's headed? I know this is supposed to be light-hearted fare but I was hoping for a little more.
