Here we get to withness a very macabre serial killer, whose name we know right from the beginning, runnning loose in the middle of Vatican City during the Pope John Paul II funeral and whose main targets are the same Cardinals who are about to elect the new Pope, head of the Catholic church, and trust me the crime scenes are not pretty!
I personally love the setting of this book, as Rome and the Vatican are places I have visit. So as I read I like to imagine myself running along their wonderful streets and churches.
The characters of the book are likeable, but I felt I could have use a bit more depth in many of them. We are introduced to a very young, italian policewoman, the very qualified Doctoressa Paola whose studies at the FBI rise her above many of her italian collegues. Our male character is a former catholic priest turned CIA operative of whom be glimpse a bit into his former life as both a man of the church and a cold blooded killer, but personally I would have love to get to know about him. There are many secondary characters which kind of blur all for me because the author didn't spend much time developing them but are part of a very intriguing story.
As we read we witness our serial killer progress into the monster we get to hate throughout the book and personally for me, pity at the end. The book is originally written in spanish, so maybe that's why I felt that we lost some of his heart during the translation. I have to admit that I fast forwarded some pages just to get to the juice of the story.
While we are trying to catch the killer, we get a healthy dose in theology, the Old Testament, the inside in a lot of the catholic rituals and history, the workings of the Vatican police and Swiss Army and dive deep into such taboo themes for the Catholic church as the scandal of pedophillia that plague the Catholic church in the last decade and spark fly between a woman and a man of the church which drives us directly into the celibacy theme in the Catholic church.....
Wow - talk about your great thrillers! 1990's and an American 'home' for sex-offender priests, and Rome in 2005 when Pope John Paul II died and cardinals were gathering to elect the new pontiff. A seriously disturbed man (whose identity we know almost from the start) who is murdering and mutilating the cardinals one by one. Add in a female Italian police detective who butts heads with her superiors as well as the Vatican police (who want to keep all this completely secret) and the presence of a 'retired' priest who doubles as a CIA spy and knows the inside workings of the Vatican and oh, by the way - he also knows the killer. Can they figure out why, who is next, and when? This is a ride of a book that will completely devour you. Can't wait to start on the author's second - "The Moses Expedition" in which the priest/spy also is a character.
Juan Gomez-Jurado has written a brilliant book that is a cross between Silence of the Lambs and Anges and Demons, and it is wonderful.
Father Anthony Fowler is a CIA operative and part of the Vatican's secret service. If it was up to him, he'd lay low, but he apparently owes someone some big favors and is called in to find who is murdering cardinals before the conclave to elect a new Pope.
The Italian profiler, Paola Dicanti, works with Fowler and there are obvious sparks, but the cat and mouse between excellent good guys and excellent villian that pulls this page turner on.
Wish folks would translate books quicker!
The Apotheoses of Lacspor
A very good mystery book.. The Lost Testament is its equal in keeping you turning the page - you can't put this book down when you start reading it so keep that in mind. Same with The Lost Testament. Both sensational mystery books.
A very entertaining read.
A Pope has died and a new one must be elected. In the process of the election a murderer starts to kill some of the key Cardinals who will be voting.
Assigned to find the murderer is a female Italian policewoman, a Vatican policeman and former priest turned CIA operative.
Their pursuit of the killer and the strange force behind the murders is a premise that may be fiction or non-fiction-that will be up to the reader.
If you want a mystery with some twists this is it. Murder and mayhem and some gross descriptions throughout the narrative but it will definitely keep your interest.
If you are Catholic or have been to Vatican City you will recognize many points of interest.
Excellent thriller with great historical and technical accuracy about the Roman Catholic Church.
This is another good book about Vatican intrigue with an innovative touch to the story line, some good twists, and good dialogue.
