This book is now chronically outdated and old-fashioned in its style, but Barclay's treatment of the the Apostles' Creed remains second to none in his ability to draw on a huge range of Barclay famously described himself as having a second-class mind, which many have dismissed as false-modesty. However, whilst I understand where he is coming from in that there was rarely anything original in his thinking, his genius lay in collating the thinking of others into an easily understood digest.

Professor Barclay reminds u. This book provides a helpful historical study of the ancient Apostles' Creed. Only 7 chapters in, this detailed look at the Apostles' Creed has exceeded my expectations - which were pretty high based on my previous encounters with the author's work. More importantly, it provides expert and loving pastoral guidance on the meaning of each passage in this important summary of the Christian faith. Dr. Barclay views God primarily in terms of a loving and forgiving father-in sharp contrast with those who see God more in terms of a triumphant king bent on destroying his enemies.
