After many years of neglect, nutritional research is again being done. The fad for low fat diets appears to have spawned insulin resistance leading to cascading deterioration of America's health, and researchers are anxiously looking for cures.

Besides explaining the operation of many nutrients the brain needs, this book lists warning signals that your body might send long before you notice your thinking beginning to deteriorate. Research is also beginning to show connections between deficiencies in certain fatty acids and such things as ADHD, aggression, poor memory, etc. The author tells us what are the essential fatty acids and where to get them. This is why I will keep the book instead of donating it to the library as I often do.

I noticed a couple of small errors. One, an editing error which left Haddock listed under fresh water fish. The other states mayonnaise has trans fats. Unless somehow lemon juice and eggs acquire a hydrogen atom when oil is slowly poured into the whirling mixture, I don't see how true mayonnaise can have trans fats. As a whole, however, this is a useful book that should be required reading.

This book is a completely new way to look at nutrition and your mental health. How to feed yourself and especially your
child to ensure their full potential. It makes you wonder about all of the "CRAP" like fast food, soda (Pepsi and Coke are rich
but what is it doing to our children and women our unborn children?) and prepackaged food! I know it's easier to pull through the
fast food drive way but what about vegetables and fruit and pure lean protein. It makes me rethink everything I put into my mouth
and the mouth of my child. This is a mind opening book and a must read for everyone especially the mom's out there and the mom's too
be......feed your babies healthy and not only will their bodies grow but more importantly their minds will be able to gown and
they will be focused and they will learn. Why do some many kids today have learning disablities (ADHA, AUSTISM, EMOTIONAL DISORDERS,
ANGER ISSUES) we need to look at what we as mothers are eating and what we feed our children!

A very well written book on the subject that pretty much covers everything. Some of it is pretty technical, and bears a good bit of study, but as the author mentions, you do not have to get into the scientific section, but you can read the parts that are more lay friendly. This is information is a must read for anyone who is health conscious and wants to get the truth about dietary fats, which ones are beneficial and which are harmful, and the correct balance between them. It also explains which oils (fats) are absolutely essential for brain and general health, and how to obtain them from foods and supplements. Thank you Dr. Schmidt for making this crucial information available in a well laid out book that gets to the point and dispels the myth of a 'low fat' diet, and promotes the concept of a 'healthy fats' diet. kk voicebender.com

I appreciate that the author writes from clinical experience and is straightforward with the reader about the limited research on this topic. Also, I appreciate the effort to provide the reader with something they can take action on. I do think the next edition needs to have more research cited.
