I found Biostatistics in Public Health highly effective for teaching introductory biostatistics, and students were universally positive in their feedback on the text, including its many practice problems. This book is most remarkable for its clarity and conciseness in covering all of the topics at just the right depth for an introductory course. A particular strength of the book is that it organizes hypothesis testing and other statistical procedures EXPLICITLY in terms of the kinds of samples and variables to which they apply, which has the very practical effect of teaching, right from the beginning, which statistic applies to which kind of problem.

Even though my last previous statistics course was sometime in the first Clinton administration, I found this book's lessons and instructions easy to follow and very helpful in the classroom

Yes, it's a textbook. Even though my last previous statistics course was sometime in the first Clinton administration, I found this book's lessons and instructions easy to follow and very helpful in the classroom. There is an online supplement to the book, but as far as I could find out, Yes, it's a textbook. It's written with the assumption that the reader has some amount of statistics knowledge, and expands on that knowledge with a focus on, as you might guess, public health and epidemiology.

Name and describe each of the 4 classifications for biostatistic information (AKA characteristics or variables or outcomes or endpoints). 1. DICHOTOMOUS VARIABLES have only two possible responses. The response options are usually coded "yes" or "no:' Exposure to a particular risk factor (. smoking) is an example of a dichotomous variable.

Essentials of Biostatistics in Public Health, Second Edition provides a fundamental and engaging background for students learning to apply and appropriately interpret biostatistics applications in the field of public health. Many examples are drawn directly from the author's remarkable clinical experiences with the renowned Framingham Heart Study, making this text practical, interesting, and accessible for those with little mathematical background. The examples are real, relevant, and manageable in size so that students can easily focus on applications rather than become overwhelmed by computations. The text is accompanied by an online workbook: Statistical Computing Using Microsoft Excel (for Mac or PC).New Features of the Second Edition:• Learning objectives and more practice problems for every chapter• A new chapter on survival analysis • A new chapter on nonparametric statistics • Coverage of sensitivity, specificity, and performance of screening tests connecting probability to real and important applications• An expansion of the chapter on multivariable methods with more emphasis on interpretation of multivariable regression • A bank of questions for the audience response system ("clickers") for instructorsLooking for more real-life evidence? I'd be lying if I said biostats wasn't confusing to begin with. Coming from the human services field (not the math or science field) I knew it would be a challenge but this book does very little to help. Usually the first part of the chapters makes sense and gives you some basic information about definitions and why we use certain formulas, but then when it jumps into the formulas themselves it does a poor job of explaining the process or what occurs.

We had to use this textbook for my biostatistics class, and I was pleasantly surprised with it. I've taken a lot of science/statistics classes in the past, and do understand that many times statistic books can be somewhat difficult to comprehend. However, this is not the case with this book. The book was very well written, and easy to understand as long as you spent sufficient time to study and comprehend the material. Don't be fooled, biostatistics can be a very difficult subject to grasp (I spent HOURS studying), but this book does a very good job of explaining it as best as it can. Many of the 3- star ratings will be from those who are grading their review of the book based upon the difficulty of the subject, not on the content within the textbook.

The only chapter that I found to not be very helpful was a later chapter on multiple linear regression analysis. The online material here, helps you to understand much better and fill in the gaps that the physical textbook left out. Being in chapter 8, and having to refer back to the same example back in chapter 3 over and over again, can get kind of annoying as well, but aside from these two very minor issues (well, ok, 1 minor issue. I missed 4 questions on my final from the multiple linear regression analysis crahp. That needs to be fixed.) the textbook was very well written, gave clear examples, and was very fair in its review questions at the end of each chapter.

A lot of narrative examples with references to tables or examples several pages earlier make following the formula with the numerical definition difficult. I like the formula summaries and practice questions. I wish the author had more clearly identified each calculation within the formula as sometimes it is not clear how the value is attained. The use of many acronymes is also difficult to remember the full term for the new student. I learn best by reinforcement and it is time consuming to try to go back several pages to verify and recall what the abbreviation represents. I am using the text for an online only class so this could be a major culprit to difficulties in understanding elements within the book.

Ok so at first I rented this book because I got tired of paying steep prices for textbooks. Then after I used it for my course I went back and bought it brand new! This book is awesome and I cannot express how easy it was to follow and help understand the challenging concept of Biostatistics. That course was allegedly one of the most challenging in my field but this book made it super easy. I even use it to complete later coursework because the text for those courses are so confusing. If you have it keep it, if you need it buy it, if you don't have it you are probably not a scientist:)

The online format was good but not great. Tables were on different pages and the text was top to bottom verses looking like an actual book page. However the information was great. Very difficult course study. I would have preferred to buy the physical book on this one.

This textbook is one of the few math related books that I actually read through the whole semester and didn't dread the weekly readings. The formulas were explained and built on in ways I felt comfortable with and could follow. I also found the sample problems worked out in the textbook to be understandable in one read through (a phenomenon I don't usually experience with quantitative textbook examples) without having the process explained by someone else first.

I had a very hard time with the majority of this text - which is primarily computations. The chapters are poorly organized and make tracking the process of computations very difficult. Especially if you have little math or stats experience as I do.
This book assumes that you already know statistics.. it does not describe any of the equations and how to arrive at the correct answers. I continuously had to refer to youtube videos and other sources..
