AN AFTERNOON TO KILL, by Shelley Smith. The author, Shelley Smith, then unwraps a mysterious Gothic tale of conniving, family intrigue and murder in Victorian England. In an exotic Oriental setting, a young man discovers an English woman in luxurious accommodations. When ''An Afternoon to Kill'' was published in 1954, Anthony Boucher said, ''It is, as one expects of Smith, admirably written, rather like a subtler and more economic Joseph Shearing in its fine sense of crime-in-period.

Shelley Smith (born October 25, 1952 in Princeton, New Jersey) first came to prominence as a fashion model, appearing on many magazine covers in the 1970s and early 1980s. She then became an actress, primarily on television, working throughout the 1980s.

Lancelot Jones is a young Englishman on his way to a small town in India where he will take up a teaching post when his plane is inconveniently grounded miles from his destination. The pilot tells him that it is a minor mechanical problem and repairs should take only a few hours, perhaps the entire afternoon. Upon hearing the news, Lance decides to explore and heads for the first building that he can see which leads him to find Alva Hines, an old woman living in a large house in the desert. He is welcomed in by her servant, and spends the afternoon with her, and learns about her and her love of stories --- one which is a tale of adultery and murder. The afternoon passes easily enough between them, but things are rarely what they seem.

This historical tale is a wonderfully entertaining blend of mystery, suspense and family drama.

The language of both the narration and the dialogue rang true to the era as did the description of the mores of the that time period.

As I was reading this book, I kept incorrectly guessing as to the direction it was taking. I found this book to be an enjoyable reading experience right up to the satisfying ending.
A man stranded in the desert, waiting for his aeroplane to be repaired, listens to an elderly woman tell a story of family, love, death, marriage and manners.

The main story narrator uses lots of Victorian language giving me a real sense of the cluttered Victorian era. The story takes about half the book to get the any mystery or intrigue. From then on, it's turned into a page turner.
This one. Is a fairly spicy story of Victorian love and loss as told to a stranded traveler while he awaits repairs. It appears to be fairly transparent.....until the end! Fun reading.
I enjoyed the ride although I was expecting a little more "surprise" to the story than what was ultimately revealed. Good writing. Kept my interest overall.
A thoroughly engrossing, somewhat cozy mystery with a masterful O. Henry ending twist. I will definitely be looking for more of this author's work!
A quick read with an unexpected ending. Just when you think you have it figured out, it all changes! Light entertainment
Very nicely written! Like all good mysteries it keeps you wondering while relentlessly drawing you into the plot with believable characters.
