A major, potentially devastating electrical storm is moving up Britain from northern France on Midsummer's Eve. The next day finds nine Christian clergymen dead, most apparently from lightning strikes. A deadly coincidence, or were they planned murders? And if they were premeditated, why?

This book was originally published in 1934 and was republished recently by Endevour Press. The age of the book becomes obvious to the reader in the slightly stilted, old-fashioned prose and conversations which recall a time of a much more formal mode of address and interaction. Old Scottish Celtic lore, legends, and ancient religions are a major part of the mystery and investigation.

The main character, a young newspaper editor of a local weekly paper, James MacPherson, is a likable one who has a bit of the modern tabloid reporter in him as he leverages his unique position near one of the victims into the center of the nationwide investigation.

The action moves slowly with a plethora of policemen and investigators on the job, each of whom have to be accounted for in each scene and event which further slows the narrative down. The clues and foreshadowing are obvious enough to allow the reader to solve the who-done-it before the characters finally figure it out, which may become extremely frustrating for the careful reader who will wish they just get it over with.

Mildly recommended only for those readers who enjoy Celtic- or Scottish-themed retro mysteries.

Very well written, cast of characters was interesting, the history of old myths and cults held my interest throughout the book.

I do believe it was the worst book I've read in a long time. Story line was bad jumped all over. I kept waiting thinking it would improve all the way to the end.

Bit of a slow start, but it picked up better as I continued to read. Overall a pretty good book.

This book was difficult to get into. Stopped reading at third chapter. It just dragged on and was hard to follow
