In 1987, Prather's penultimate book, Shellshock, was published in hardcover by Tor Books. At Prather's death in 2007, he had completed but not published his last Shell Scott Mystery. Take a Murder, Darling - 1958. Over Her Dear Body - 1959. He donated his papers to the Richard S. Prather Manuscript Collection at the University of Wyoming, in Laramie, Wyoming. His final novel, The Death Gods, was published October 2011, in print and ebook formats by Pendleton Artists, with permission of the Richard S. Prather Estate and Linda Pendleton.

Some of Prather's books are funnier than others, and some are more convoluted and puzzle-oriented, but they're all worth reading if you like "Hard Case Crime" and e P. who always get their woman (and probably several of them), in the old Matt Helm tradition.

Black_Hawk_Down

This the second Shell Scott story I have read. This one is fast paced like the previous one I read. What I like about this one is it covers a period of about three days. The story is one of murder and mayhem. It starts with a murder then jumps back to Shell Scott getting involved in the murder of Zoe Avilla because of a thug named Roy Toby, who is trying to muscle in on the business of Lita Korrel. But beside this there are more bodies to count before Shell finds out the truth. I like the style of writing used here, which is a first person narrative not long and drawn out but a bit on the terse side. If you like mysteries then this is a good one to read to walk down the mean streets on.

Tyler Is Not Here

I'm in a book challenge again this year, and one of the categories is a "trashy paperback” my first thought was a Shell Scott. I haven't read one since the 8th grade which was a very, very long time ago. I've never forgotten the books and how much I enjoyed the read and this holds true today. They are well written for the genre with a number of clever lines that amuse. I'm an LA girl from the books era and enjoyed retuning to my childhood stomping grounds. I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

The books in this series are fun and fast-paced, and "Take a Murder, Darling" is no exception. Like the others, it's also chock-a-block full of beautiful women. At the time of publication (Fifties) the sex quotient was quite heady, but now seems more nostalgic than naughty. Though it at times verges on parody, it always plays straight with the detective genre.

I started reading Richard Prather back in the 60's, I always looked forward to the next Shell Scott book, I have loved every single one of them! I wish Amazon would sort them chronologically so I could read them in order once again. I am 75 now and hopefully, I will own them all again!

I always love a Shell Scott romp. Some of Prather's books are funnier than others, and some are more convoluted and puzzle-oriented, but they're all worth reading if you like "Hard Case Crime" and fifties/sixties-style P. I.s who always get their woman (and probably several of them), in the old Matt Helm tradition. Recommended.
