"Fairworth House had good bones. ... Fairworth wasn't palatial, but it would never be mistaken for a cottage." And it required extensive renovations before Lori Shepard's recently retired father-in-law, William Willis, Sr. can move from Boston into the Georgian house just outside of Finch, "a small village with no recognizable claim to fame." The house is an easy pony-ride distance from Lori's home and thus ideal for the doting grandfather of the Shepard twins. Lori has prepared for the official opening day and is ready until at the last minute the caterer has to cancel, the village population prepares delectable food, discovered treasures are sent for restoration and a new caretaker couple arrives late in the evening. Willis Sr. hires the Donovan's on the spot despite Lori's misgivings. What does Aunt Dimity have to say? She communicates in her perfect script and reigns Lori in, offers suggestions, and asks the right questions. Before long strange things happen at Fairworth house. What does this Victorian family tree show? Is Mrs Donovan really as helpful as all that? And then there is another problem with Mrs Sarah Pyne and Henrique Cocinero that Willis Sr. offers to solve. Lots of problems, hilarious situations, unbelievable scrapes and easy solutions. It is my favorite Aunt Dimity book so far.

Small villages have their own quirky folks and rumors. They also have history that is passed down generation to generation. Some of it is not always happy and sometimes families loose their wealth and prestige and the next generation is l get to make it on their own. A mystery is happening in this little village and the town folk are not happy as they want to know what it is.

Having returned to her adopted village of Finch after her adventures in New Zealand, Lori is busy aiding her father-in-law to restore a run-down estate, Fairworth House, and to avoid the village spinsters who have developed a most avid interest in his activities and future plans. Lori's life becomes even more hectic when she's drawn into a harebrained scheme by Sally Pyne, the local teashop owner, who told a few "little white lies" to a charming Mexican man on a recent vacation that have come back to haunt her. Aunt Dimity comes to the rescue with a brilliant plan that Lori, William and William's slightly suspicious new staff, the Donovans, all pull together to implement in order to deceive the entire town as well as Sally's Latin lover. Things look promising at first but when strange things begin to happen at the mansion (disappearing relics, ghostly music and a theft), Lori needs all the help - both human and supernatural - to succeed and, in the process, to learn the marvelous history behind the newly restored estate.

It was wonderful to return to Finch in this novel and to be re-introduced to its quirky characters. Though the plot was, like the other books, somewhat predictable, Atherton's humerous glimpse into village life (which is most certainly NOT predictable!) makes up for what it lacks in excitement. There are several passages that just made me giggle with pleasure at the lows to which the villagers stoop to discover William's secret. Too, it's nice to see how the characters have changed and (in some cases, at least) matured throughout the series and to have new characters, like Bree Pym, the Donovans and Senor Cocinero, to add spice to the village mix. All in all, a great addition to the Dimity books!

A delightful light read. Lori, an American, lives with her family in a quaint English village replete with nosy neighbors good friends and four single older women who would like to be her father-in-law's next wife. He hires a couple to be his housekeeper/cook and groundskeeper janitor. When objects start being moved and disappearing from the house, Lori starts to investigate with the help of Aunt Dimity. Aunt Dimity willed Lori her house and fortune, and a blue journal by which she communicates with Lori. Lori, as usual, jumps to all the wrong conclusions, and Aunt Dimity tries to keep her on the right track. At last the mystery is solved, and the busybodys are put in their place. A typical Atherton story. but fun.

I'm really enjoying this series of village mysteries. Nancy Atherton frequently surprises with plot turns and blossoming characterizations. In Family Tree, Lori Shepherd's father-in-law moves to her small Cotswold town and another family returns in unexpected ways. A house's greatest treasure are the people who live in it.
