Helen Chappell's Slow-Dancing With the Angel of Death ranks right up there . A first mystery by an author of romances written under twopen names.

Helen Chappell's Slow-Dancing With the Angel of Death ranks right up there with the best books I've read this year. I found myself identifying with the heroine, Hollis Ball, from the very first page. She is independent, intelligent, and hysterically funny. The book begins with Hollis heading to the funeral of her wealthy, irresponsible ex-husband. introduces us to a solid, 'in your face' protagonist you will want to read about againwhen Chappell's next book in the series releases early in1997.

Sunny loves her father. He plays the cittern, sings songs and tells tales with the voice of an angel.

It was only a little later when Marda heard a steady rapping at the door. She had eaten her evening meal and was sitting at the table before a lit candle, attempting needlework. Sunny loves her father. But, just as he cannot hold his liquor, he never seems to learn when it might be best to hold his tongue. He leaves a trail of offended patrons behind them as he and Sunny traipse across the length of Europe and further east.

Moneyed landgrabbers, militant ecologists, nefarious legal doings and possible murder, combined with what just may be the sexiest ghost ever created, make this a fast-moving, irreverent, humorous romp of a mystery.

As a resident of the Eastern Shore I especially enjoyed her book. She gets us, and our way of life. Her mystery had enough twists and turns to keep me entertained, and her characters are colorful. If you live on the ES you need to read her writing!

I read this book originally when it came out in paperback. Without giving away more than the blurb does, the ghost character is central to the book, and is well done, with a nice light touch. This book was published many years ago, and thus isn't part of, and doesn't read like, the current annoying trend for paranormal vampires, paranormal werewolves, and paranormal just-about-anything. I was happy to find this book available in e-book, and enjoyed re-reading it.

Although I'm not from the Eastern Shore, the author makes me feel as if I know the area. The characters are amusing and believable, and I was easily able to put myself in Hollis' place - not wanting to believe this was happening to me. I laughed out loud several times even though I was just re-reading it.

I have noticed that the second book in the series (Dead Duck) is also available as an e-book, and plan to re-read it as well.

This is an enjoyable book, either in paper or as an e-book.
