Anna is back at Isle Royale in Lake Michigan. For just a few weeks she's joining a research group studying wolf-moose management to see what she can learn from them. She and the study team will hike deep into the frozen wilderness and base themselves in a bunkhouse with no electricity, no running water and no flush toilets. From there they will snowshoe over rough terrain collecting ticks, wolf scat and moose scat.

Anna never likes being cooped up with other people. The bunkhouse is particularly claustrophobic. It doesn't help that the atmosphere among the team members is quickly growing uneasy. Even nature feels off balance to Anna. The wolves aren't acting normal, and there seems to be a monster wolf prowling the woods...

Anna is always on the verge of freezing to death in this novel. And the team keeps shrinking as people die freakishly or disappear mysteriously. The dissection of a dead wolf produces blood and gore that prefigures more blood and gore. And there are multiple crisis endings. If you like suspense, you'll love this. If not, be prepared to suffer.

I never guessed the machinations behind the sinister doings, or who was up to what. Which is always a plus in a mystery. Anna finally figures it all out, and maybe you can too, but I didn't.

As usual, Anna has multiple opportunities to get battered by man and nature, to escape death at the last minute, and to demonstrate that a small but smart woman can eventually overcome a hostile male of greater size.

Plenty of thrills and chills in Winter Study. You may want to get under a blanket to read it.

You'll need a sweater while reading this book that is set in winter on an island in Lake Superior. Nevada Barr is a deft writer. You never notice her working to paint a scene or describe a character. You just see it and know them. All of her books that I have read contain some horrifying sights and events and end up being suspenseful. These aren't things I especially look for in a mystery (I can enjoy an nice easygoing cozy.) but she does it so well I go along. Her books also tend to be quite funny in spots and sometimes are informative. I learned a tiny bit about DNA data in this one.

I love Barr's novels but this one disappointed me due to the language and actions of one character. I don't expect that in her writing nor did add to the story. The story itself was great but I can't recommend it

I'm reading all Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon books in order, and this one froze me. In a good way. Of course, no one has experienced as many horrors and battles for her life as Anna, and when I start each new book I'm expecting to be a little "oh, been here, done that," but I never am. A great read.

It's been a while since I've read one of the Anna Pigeon books, but I was attracted by the location, on a wild island in northern Lake Superior, and by the subject matter, a long-term study of an isolated colony of wild wolves. Add in the complicated personalities and motivations of a group of humans also isolated on that island in the depth of winter, stir in a nesting-dolls trail of mysteries, and you've got an engrossing adventure tale.

I have always liked Nevada Barr's books. I like National Parks and she gives me a great view of national parks that I could never get else where. However, I had little trouble with "Winter Study". It seemed to be more a study of government people not being able to get along with each other, eventually several being killed off, and less of what these government people study on Isle Royale in the winter time. However, it was a good book, I'm glad I read it, but I have to put it down for a while ever 1 to 3 chapters for a clearing of my brain.

Maybe it is because I read this book during the Polar Vortex descent upon my home this winter, but I found it not nearly as much to my liking as the Nevada Barr books which take place in the Southwest!! I got sick and tired of hearing about the extreme weather conditions in research program in upper Great Lakes. I really didn't identify with any the characters very much which is unusual for me. I did find the mystery somewhat intriguing, but I was glad when I got to the end.
I always enjoy Anna Pigeon and her National Park mysteries, but this one was particularly intense. The setting of Isle Royale was turned into a definitely unpleasant place to spend a winter. If anyone has any delusions about winter experiments in the park, Nevada Barr's detailed descriptions inside the housing and outside in the cold result in a picture of bone-chilling cold and discomfort. Add to that the fear of not knowing who the culprit is, the mishaps that occur because of the weather, and the gathering of unusual characters all make this one of Nevada Barr's most exciting books.
