I like Sara Paretsky's graceful and literate style. I also like her fictional sleuth, V. I. Warshawski. She has integrity as well as a kind of intelligence that is often late in kicking in. I have become familiar with some of Warshawski's characteristic traits, such as her love of hot baths and Black Label scotch as restoratives and her addiction to running. It is refreshing that she is a financial investigator who gets enmeshed in criminal matters through peripheral connections .I also appreciate the fact that the author lets Warshawski age naturally, with concomitant decline in her physical prowess and her daring. Aging brings some salutary caution to this impulsive detective.
Warshawski makes many a near-fatal mistake, but she comes through in the end, usually with the help of friends. I am now on Book 9 and intend to read the series to its end.

She never fails to give you a good read - I read some of her earlier works and then she fell off my radar when she was on a hiatus of sorts until I came across some of her books on a clearance table at a local bookstore - I bought one to catch up with her and was not disappointed, I then caught up the rest of the series with her Kindle editions. The only CON to her books is the higher than normal Kindle price - I wanted to finish the series and was glad I did BUT I feel she needs to get in line with her Kindle edition prices

First things first: I love VI Warshawsky, I really enjoy the character and her friends. This book, however, is not her best. Is it readable? Yes! Is it entertaining? Absolutely! It is simply that it is too much, and you have to be ready to make concessions: VI always acts out valiantly in the face of adversity, especially in defense of those less fortunate, less strong, more vulnerable, but this time you have to join her in an adventure that has too much of everything, and whose resolution is perforce plagued with implausible coincidences. This time even Lottie takes a step back, and may be you should too, unless you really are a fan of this series.

I'm a fan of Paretsky's novels, so I know what to expect from the intrepid V I Warshawski, but I really enjoyed this book. In this story, V I solves several murders, saves a pension fund, and takes care of some sleazy con artists selling almost worthless corporate bonds to elderly neighbors--and they had dogs destroyed for no good reason. Too bad V I can't find enough paying clients. Good still triumphs in the end here. Highly recommendeld

For other baby boomers, who get confused about the ins and outs of pension scandals, V.I. takes on this pressing financial corruption case. In the typical Paretsky way, the case is very close to V.I.'s life and involves her neighbors. Paretsky has the remarkable ability of using her support network in creative and new ways. It's great to see everything unfold. Her novels are always complex and intricate.

A real page turner. Love her flawed nature but loved her righteousness in defending the helpless and ageing in society.
Goltizuru
In every episode V.I. is beaten, thrown into the sewer that is south Chicago, has her life nearly destroyed her friends beaten and shot. There can't be much of her left to attack. Chicago according to V.I. is the crime sewer of the U.S. No detective has been shot stabbed, nearly drowned, the object of pure torture etc. etc. in the history of detective stories.
Really good story lots of stuff going on lots of stuff really could be going on in the world we live in today especially company pensions I know what I had to go through to get my husbands
