Gone With a Handsomer Man is a book with an identity crisis

Gone With a Handsomer Man is a book with an identity crisis. It can't decide if it wants to be a mystery or a romance, so it tries to be both and ends up doing neither very well. For something that should be a quick, snappy, fast-paced read, the plot goes nowhere rather quickly, taking nearly a quarter of the book to g Though it started out promising, with a jilted heroine chucking peaches at her philandering fiancee, half-way through and just couldn't muster up the will to care anymore.

Gone with a Handsomer Man - Michael Lee West.

Gone With A Handsomer Man is fun, funny, and fabulous. I loved this book! Michael Lee West writes a southern cozy mystery with a poetic cadence that is mesmerizing, putting the reader smack dab into her southern world with an authenticity and lyrical beauty that, to me, is pure genius. The dialogue, setting, narration, and characters are all wonderfully, genuinely southern, but it's her way of describing things in a poetic fashion that makes me in awe of Michael Lee West's writing ability.

The room was larger than Aunt Bluette’s living room and reminded me of a chessboard, with black-and-white tiles on the floor and walls. I leaned into the claw-foot tub, pushed the stopper into the drain, and switched on the faucet. While the tub filled, I opened the linen closet. Towels were stacked on one shelf, toilet paper on another. I pulled out a black plaid towel and saw the top of a ziplock bag. I bent closer. The bag was filled with dried oregano and a glass pipe.

I was so happy to find this novel, after quite a long period of not seeing anything of Ms. West's published. I downloaded and dived in. The first few chapters were delightful! West's beautiful Southern atmosphere, the language, what I have come to love after her crazy ladies series.
But then - enter the hero, Cooper, and all was spoilt. High-spirited even if quirky Teeny becomes a silly little woman who jumps in bed with her ex-beau on the first opportunity they are together alone, telling herself that NOT having sex with him all those years ago was the reason he left her for another girl who did not keep him waiting, so she is not going to repeat her old mistakes. She seems to forget all her troubles (which are not tiny bit of - she is homeless, broken and under murder investigation) and gets engrossed in speculations and strongest emotions about the man's sexual behavior during the years they were separated. Within just a dozen pages, we witness old love reborn, too graphical sexual scenes, and, already bitter jealousy baring its teeth. Very strange behavior for a woman who had her share of unhappiness and should have learned a lesson or two, you would think...
But West's writing is great, and I am still half way into this tale, so I hope this is not what the book is going to be about till the end.

I gave this book three stars because I felt that it did not live up to its potential. At times it is a novel with depth especially when the main character, Teeny, talks about her childhood. At times it is a light beach novel about quirky southerners with odd names like Teeny, Miss Dora, and Red Butler. There is also a light mystery, a romance, and a love triangle. I felt the book could have been so much more if it had stuck to either the mystery or to the romance/love triangle angle. There are too many things going on...like the old adage about too many cooks in the kitchen.

I liked the main character, Teeny, though I found it hard to believe that she would count her lies but find it totally appropriate to sleep with a guy mere days after her finance is found dead. And don't even get me started on the repeated phrase after having sex of, "She felt a vague soreness between her legs." Barf and double barf. Additionally the whole love triangle thing was not needed. Are we expected to believe that her new boyfriend's estranged wife would show up on the scene, beg her rival to leave her husband alone so they can get back together, then eventually leave without putting up a fight for the husband she claims to adore? It is these inconsistencies that knock this book down to the beach read only category.

I highly recommend this series.

This was my first Teeny Templeton books, and I wish that I had saved reading it until I leave for vacation. It was so thoroughly enjoyable. Teeny and all major ( and not so major) characters were fully developed, they were endowed with totally believable, human traits and were easy to love, like, mistrust or dislike. The ending was not expected, Neil quit let in the book. Teensy thoughts, m Dora's character, and Aunt Bluette and sister Ruby's foibles made me laugh often, even as I cared about them. Enough mystery, love interest, chuckles, a few tears, and interesting story for an excellent red. I will check out other Teeny Templeton mysteries, although I want to move ford in her life, not backward.

Let me start by saying that I am a finicky reader. My taste in books is all over the board and if the book doesn't capture my attention in the first few pages then I chunk it and move on to the next read. With that being said, I LOVED this book so much that I have recommended it to several friends. The story is of Teeny, a quirky little lovable character who finds herself tangled in a murder investigation of her cheating fiance and she is the prime suspect. The dialogue alone is a funny read but the Food Network refences and Teeny's obsessive need to get in the kitchen to cook in order to destress make this even more enjoyable for those of with the culinary need to unwind.

Teeny is a such a fun character and has a great name. How can you not get hooked at the beginning when Teeny is throwing peaches from a tree at her naked fiance and his bimbo playing badmitton, no less. The murder mystery kept you guessing as well. The author ended the story with a cliff hanger. Fortunately, the next book had just been released "Teeny Bit of Trouble" and I was able to continue Teeny's escapades without waiting. I sure hope author Michael Lee West (female) is working on the next one. I can't imagine life without more Teeny.

This book did not engage my interest or encourage my approval. Everyone has an opinion and is free to express it and thus, this is my take on this book: I couldn't finish it - I didn't like how it was written, did not like the characters or the story and did not consider the purchase worth the price I paid. I was bored and finally after going half-way through the book I really didn't give one hoot in h--- how it ended or when or what happened to whom. A big disappointment all around.
Ms. West has turned out another well written, quirky book! The prose is wonderful and flows well; the author understands the Southern dialect and speech patterns . She is a master at mixing mystery with high comedy. Yes, the culprit can be predicted, but the ride the reader takes while the heroine discovers what the reader already knows is full of screaming curves, lurching stops, and laughing out loud. If you like a book that takes you the heart of the South and makes you scream with laughter, buy this book immediately!
