Reginald Charles Hill FRSL (3 April 1936 – 12 January 2012) was an English crime writer and the winner in 1995 of the Crime Writers' Association Cartier Diamond Dagger for Lifetime Achievement. Hill was born to a "very ordinary" family. His father, Reg Hill, was a professional footballer. His mother was a fan of Golden Age crime writers, and he discovered the genre while fetching her library books. He passed the Eleven plus exam and attended Carlisle Grammar School where he excelled in English.

"Reginald Hill stands head and shoulders above any other writer of homebred crime fiction." OBSERVER When young Tracey Pedley vanished in the woods around Burrthorpe, the close-knit community had their own ideas about what had happened, but Deputy Chief Constable Watmough has it down as the work of a child-killer who has since committed suicide - though others wondered about the man's fatal plunge into a disused mine shaft. Returning to a town he left in anger, Colin Farr's homecoming is ready for trouble, and when a university course brings him into contact with Ellie Pascoe, trouble starts... Meanwhile, a murder in Burrthorpe Mine forces Andy Dalziel to take action that brings him up against a hostile and frightened community...

Reginald Hill is a superb writer, he transcends "genre" writing. I've read all his books twice and will probably read them again. His characters are very real and fully drawn. Dalziel is outrageous and lovable and cunning and manipulating, oh and funny. He holds everything together. The plots are intelligent and rich in detail. I can't praise him enough. From a totally selfish point of view, I feel sad that I never wrote him a thank you for all his books while he was alive.
This story revolves around coal mining in South- and Mid-Yorkshire. Ultimately, four murders are solved by the Mid-Yorkshire CID, including Peter Pascoe and Andy Dalziel. The characters are well-developed and believable, as is the dialog. The plot is developed slowly, but not tediously, and all loose end are tied up by the end of the story. This is an easy read, and I enjoyed it. I hope you will too.
I don't know how it happened, but Under World escaped me. I have read, and/or listened to, all the Dalziel & Pascoe books more than a few times, but somehow I never knew Under World existed. Though each book can be read in any order, there is some pretty important character development that takes place in Under World that affects the character of Pascoe in several of the books that follow. I'm now re-reading the books that follow Under World and having many enjoyable "a ha!" moments. This book is a must-read for fans of the series.
It's always a treat to get reacquainted with Dalziel and Pascoe. This one involves a suicide, and the return to Mid Yorkshire of the suicide's handsome devilish son who signs up with a class taught by Ellie Pascoe. Will he break up a marriage? What's really going on? Read this terrific mystery and find out. Hill's skill with setting and characterization remain top-notch.
I am a great fan of R. Hill and dreaded reaching the end of this book because it was a joy to read. It met my expectations as to quality of prose and plot. I was surprised by the overriding "darkness" of this novel and absence of " laugh out loud" moments which mark many of the other books in this series - not that there aren't a few chuckles along the way. I wish there were more writers this gifted and that Hill had the capacity the churn out even more of the marvelous Dalziel/Pascoe tales.
Underworld is an out of the ordinary story for Dalziel and Pascoe. A small mining area in the countryside with which I was unfamiliar, old deaths and new, and the usual relationships between coppers and locals make for good reading. Peter and Ellie again have conflicting viewpoints on humanity, Andy is his usual coarse, gruff self. Well written. Enjoyable.
I like the level of literacy and wit. The author is exrememly well read as the references to the classics in all his work are integrated into the plot and character.
All the Pascoe and Dalziel mysteries are intriguing, funny and compelling. These books are extremely well-written and hard to put down.
