Cat Seeing Double: A Joe Grey Mystery (Joe Grey Mystery Series) by Shirley . I enjoyed this story, although it did get a little too fanciful for my tastes with the part about another world that the evil cat wanted to go to and trying to entice one of the human heroines to accompany him.

Only 6 left in stock (more on the way).

She grew up in southern California, riding and showing the horses her father trained. In Joe Grey’s private tower the cats waited impatiently for darkness. Beneath Joe’s paws lay a new brown envelope containing a gallon plastic freezer bag. They had stuffed Marlin Dorriss’s bills and. the torn notebook pages inside the clear container so that, when they delivered the evidence to the station, it would not cause a departmental panic. Would not trigger hasty emergency procedures to deal with a package that, at first touch, might blow the place sky high. Sealed with careful paws, and the excess air pressed out, the bag awaited only darkness to be hauled. When antiques and valuables begin to disappear from residents' homes, Joe Grey, Feline Detective, knows that something is very wrong in sleepy Molena Point, California. Lost are a five hundred thousand dollar painting, a diamond choker, and most shocking to Joe, his owner Clyde's vintage Packard roadster. The acid–tongued Azrael had paired with an old crook to loot the town and spread fear among the unsuspecting residents. Could Azrael and his partner be connected to this new set of crimes? But when a local waiter dies mysteriously at the art opening of one of Joe and Dulcie's closest human friends, the pair know that someone much more powerful and evil than Azrael's aging human friend is involved. And when miles away in San Francisco the cats' friend Kate––a woman with a mysterious, troubling secret––is followed by a stranger and robbed, the cats dig in their claws and investigate. Along with their tattercoat friend Kit, they pass clues to the police, and under the often sceptical eye of Clyde, slowly begin to sniff out the truth.

I love cats, and I love mysteries/crime novels etc. This one has it all. I was a bit turned off at first by the idea of cats being able to talk, use the phone and so on, but after a few books it becomes obvious that the characters are as weirded-out by the special talents out as the reader. Also the characters take on their own personalities. It is fun to see how a typical, but smart, cat might approach life.
The writing itself also improves as the books go on but is still somewhat repetitive. I do plan to purchase more of the series as I've gotten involved now.

[About the violence thing, the cats sometimes get into fights, the people rarely do. They get knocked down and such but the description is not graphic. Sex? The cats and people nuzzle and hug but I can't remember anything more physical than that.]

This was my first Joe Grey mystery, so I didn't know what to expect. I really didn't expect cats who actually talked to their human friends and to really get into the action solving mysteries, so this was a great surprise! A great lover of cats, I have read the "The Cat Who" series by Lillian Jackson Braun, so thought this would be similar, and it is in some ways, but different too in that these cats have much more human traits. I enjoyed this story, although it did get a little too fanciful for my tastes with the part about another world that the evil cat wanted to go to and trying to entice one of the human heroines to accompany him. I have ordered more of the Joe Grey mysteries on my Kindle and look forward to reading them to get more acquainted with the characters I met in this story.

If you follow the stories of Me. Murphy this novel has all the usual elements found in other Joel Grey works, and will not be a disappointment.

Having read most of the Joe Grey series I love the personalities of the three cats. The mystery is handled well without getting tedious. I found these after reading a few of the Midnight Louie series and the Mrs. Murphy ones. Any animal lover would like these.

Azreal, the evisl black tomcat is back prowling around the town. Joe is uneasy wondering what he doing and who human partner is. Priceless objects have stolen including Clyde. Favorite restore car. Kate Osborne is being stalk for her jewelry. Wilma receives the news that Greenlaws have killed in a traffic accident and Kit is deeply grieving. These wands are interwoven for the story.

Shirley Rousseau Murphy always gets five stars from me. Her tales of a quartet of intelligent, talking cats and the few humans who know of their abilities are exciting and amusing. The cats are able to snoop on unsuspecting criminals and tip off the cops (who are not among those in the know) in their quaint little villege of Molina Point, CA, to help solve crimes. Always a satisfactory ending!
